Our first full day in Phú Quốc kicked off exactly how we’d hoped sunshine, splashes, and poolside family fun. The pool was the perfect escape from the heat cooler than the blazing air around us, but still warm enough to stay in all day. And that’s pretty much what we did.
From breakfast until the early afternoon, the girls were in full water mode playing, splashing, diving, and laughing their heads off. Around 2:30, Dotty hit her limit (as toddlers do) and needed a nap. So Ali headed inside with her, and Georgia and I carried on soaking up the good times.
Then, just as we were winding down around 4pm, it happened one of those parenting moments that flips a chilled afternoon on its head.
Georgia slipped getting out of the pool and smacked her chin on the edge. A second later blood. A lot of it.
My heart sank. I had a quick look and straight away thought this will need stitches.
We got her inside, calmed her down, and cleaned it up as best we could. Ali didn’t hesitate straight onto the phone to call a taxi to Vinmec International Hospital while I (still thinking this might take a while) ordered some takeaway.
What happened next still blows my mind.
The hospital was 5 miles away. They were triaged on arrival, saw a consultant, had a doctor pop in four neat little stitches, gave her antibiotics and a tetanus jab, and were back at our accommodation before the takeaway arrived.
I’m not joking.
The whole thing took under 30 minutes and cost just £90. Private hospital, clean, efficient, kind staff.
She’s a bit shaken up, of course, but she’s doing great. The cut was clean, tucked just under her chin, and the stitches should be out in no time. Not the day we planned but she’s tough as nails.
We’ll lay low for a bit, keep the pool play gentle (and dry, for her), but in all honesty, if something had to happen, I’m glad it happened here. Vietnam really knows how to do healthcare.
Tomorrow we will head to the vin zoo(honestly this guy does everything) and give the cut a few days rest from the pool!
