Today started like any other scorcher in Ho Chi Minh City sweat, sunshine, and shorts. But it quickly took a frosty turn…
Ali had planned a surprise, and true to form, gave me zero clues. I hopped in the taxi in my usual gear: shorts, T-shirt, zero expectations. So imagine my face when we pulled up at Snow Town Saigon an indoor snow park in the middle of the tropics. Shorts. In a snow park. I looked like a confused tourist who took a wrong turn into Lapland.
Inside, it was a proper winter wonderland. Snow covered slopes, fake alpine houses, chilly air, and kids pelting each other with snowballs like it was second nature. The girls were buzzing.
Georgia was on a mission. She hurled herself down the toboggan run over and over always lying flat like she was trying to become a snow torpedo. It was all going great until it wasn’t. She ended up with a sore back and freezing fingers and, in the most ironic twist of the trip so far, declared it was too cold. In Vietnam. In summer. Unreal.
Meanwhile, Dotty was having the time of her life. She snuggled up on our laps and squealed with laughter every time we flew down the slope. Pure, unfiltered joy. If it were up to her, we’d still be there now.
Me? I was somewhere between impressed and frozen. The wellies I brought for myself ended up leaking, so my toes were ice blocks. And with bare calves in a room kept at fridge temperatures, I was living the full “snow rookie” experience. I reckon the staff were quietly amused.
We only stayed a couple of hours just enough to get our adrenaline fix and lose feeling in our extremities. But it was absolutely worth it. Unexpected, hilarious, and one of those memories that’ll stick.
Moral of the story?
Never trust Ali when she says, “You don’t need to bring anything.”
Also: wear trousers. And dry socks.
