Yesterday was a cracker of a day exploring the historic charm of Kanazawa’s old district. We wandered through its cobbled lanes and wooden-fronted buildings that felt like stepping back in time absolutely dripping with Edo period vibes. Georgia was fascinated, Dotty didn’t quite get it and was bored, but we soaked in every moment.
Come lunchtime, we found a little spot by the river and made makeshift picnic by chance there was a van selling some basic snack foods, The menu? A bold combo of cheese nachos, a hotdog (classic), and wait for it Ali drank orange juice. Yep, juice. Shock horror for anyone who knows her usual beverage preferences!
Full up we headed over to Kenrokuen Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and it lives up to the hype. Originally the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen is over 300 years old and represents the six attributes of a perfect landscape: seclusion, spaciousness, antiquity, artificiality, abundant water, and scenic views. We were lucky to be there during cherry blossom season, and the sight of pink petals fluttering across serene ponds and stone lanterns was pure magic. Just across the way, we admired the beautiful Ishikawa-mon Gate and the temple opposite it had such peaceful energy and beautifully aged architecture.
We wrapped up the day with an unexpected delight Cheese Monster, a Korean K-pop themed restaurant. This place was great. K-pop drawings on the wall music playing and cheese themed dishes from fondue to fried delights, and plenty of veggie-friendly options it was a fun and tasty way to end our Kanazawa day out!.
