Today, we traded the energy of Ho Chi Minh City for the gentle charm of the Mekong Delta on a classic 4 island tour and it didn’t disappoint.
It all kicked off with a breezy bus ride out of the city, taking us deep into the lush, winding waterways of southern Vietnam. We boarded a traditional wooden boat and cruised along the river, passing stilt houses, floating shops, and fields of water coconut palms.
Our first island stop offered a glimpse into local life. We sampled handmade coconut candies and honey tea, watched skilled locals work their magic, and took a peaceful 15 minute ride in a hand rowed sampan through narrow, shaded canals. It was quiet, calm, and properly stunning.
By now, we were ready for lunch but the weather had other plans. Just as we sat down, the heavens opened. Rain poured outside, but under the shelter, we tucked into a delicious local meal of rice, fresh vegetables, and tropical fruits. When the food was done, we embraced the pause like the locals do by stretching out in hammocks for a glorious 40 minutes. Rain tapping on the roof, river breeze drifting in it was heaven in slow motion.
Once the downpour eased, we continued our journey to the final stops Unicorn, Phoenix, and Dragon Islands.
One of those islands I forget the one was l known for its rich local flavours. We sipped earthy tea and tasted handmade chocolate while soaking up the scenery. Then came an unexpected moment where four local women gathered around to sing for us, performing traditional folk songs that echoed in the air. Their voices, backed by simple instruments, showed the heart of the Mekong even if a bit out of tune at times (and no I couldn’t do better)
On the bus ride home we had a brief stop at the local temple which hosted 4 faiths all laid out together, working in harmony as one, it was a quiet sanctuary and shows that’s difference can be put aside!
Anyhow, singing, chocolate, hammocks in the rain just another unforgettable day in Vietnam!
