Today, we had the pleasure of exploring Banská Štiavnica, a stunning world heritage town nestled in the heart of Slovakia. From the moment we arrived, the charm of this historic gem was undeniable. The “light drizzle snow,” as I’ve started calling it, fell gently throughout the day, adding an enchanting touch to the already picturesque town.
Our adventure began at the Old Castle (Starý zámok), a magnificent structure perched above the town. Unlike any castle we’ve seen before, it seemed to blend history and magic, its rugged walls and towers whispering stories of centuries past. Wandering through its courtyards and ancient halls while fine snowflakes swirled in the air was like stepping into a fairy tale. Georgia was fascinated by the castle’s virtual ar game, while Dotty was unsure of the drizzle snow but indoors she added her own echoes to the ancient stones, she was quite loud :P.
After our castle tour, we headed down into town for lunch at a cosy café. The warmth of traditional Slovak dishes paired perfectly with the chilly weather outside. We savoured the food (G had some pasta, Ali had some local cheese dish which was amazing and I had a local dish which was gnocchi based) while we chatting about our favourite parts of the castle.
The day’s finale was a trip to the local soft play centre a perfect spot for the kids to burn off energy (and for us to rediscover our inner child). The highlight? Without a doubt, Ali’s epic slide moment. Let’s just say that the “fast slide” was much faster than she anticipated! She flew out of the end like a rocket, and thankfully, I had the camera out to capture the hilarity.
Banská Štiavnica truly has a rich history, beautiful landscapes, and a welcoming atmosphere. Today was a perfect mix exploration and simple fun and sometimes its the simple things like a soft play that make it worthwhile.
And yes, the video of Ali’s slide adventure is safely backed up. I suspect it’ll become a family classic in no time.
Until tomorrow’s adventure…
