Phuket isnโt just about beaches and boat trips itโs also rich in culture, calm, and colossal statues! On our latest adventure, we stepped away from the sands and explored two of the islandโs most spiritually significant and visually striking landmarks: Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha.
๐ First Stop: Wat Chalong Phuketโs Most Revered Temple
Pulling into the temple grounds, we were immediately struck by the grandeur of Wat Chalong (officially Wat Chaiyathararam), Phuketโs largest and most important Buddhist temple. With its ornate roofs, golden trim, and tranquil gardens, itโs a peaceful escape even with kids in tow.
Georgia was fascinated by the statues and vibrant wall paintings inside the temple halls but she hates the real life looking Buddha statues!. Dotty was more interested in running away from the firecracker statue thing where people put fireworks and lit them! It was just too much for poor dotty!!
That sad, the space is vast and welcoming, perfect for families.
๐ก Top Tip: Shoulders and knees need to be covered, so bring a scarf or sarong just in case and donโt forget to take off your shoes before entering the prayer halls.
๐งโโ๏ธ Second Stop: The Big Buddha A Colossal Sight with Views to Match
From Wat Chalong, we made the winding drive up Nakkerd Hill to visit the Big Buddha and wow, itโs even bigger in person!

Towering 45 metres high, this serene white marble statue looks over the entire island. We approached from the back first (as in the photo above), and the sheer scale of the statue made all of us pause. The peaceful atmosphere is almost contagious, and the breeze at the top is a welcome reward after the climb.
We stayed a while, taking in the panoramic views of the Andaman Sea and Phuket Town. It felt like the perfect blend of spiritual calm and natural beauty.
๐ธ Donโt Miss: The photo ops here are incredible, especially in the late morning light when the white statue contrasts against the blue sky.
๐งณ Worth the Drive?
Iโd say so. These two spots are must visits and give you a chance to soak in culture while slowing down, soaking in the scenery, and seeing a different side of Phuket.
Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha offer something for everyone reflection, architecture, and awe inspiring views.
๐บ๏ธ How to Get There:
๐ From Patong/Karon/Kata: Both sites are easily reachable by car or Grab. We went by car and parking was simple at both. ๐ Allow a half a day to enjoy both locations without rushing.
Next time youโre on the island, carve out a few hours to experience these incredible landmarks. Itโs a side of Phuket you and your family wonโt forget.
