What do you do when your long haul flight gets cancelled, leaving you stranded thousands of miles from home? If you’re us, you take an unexpected detour through another country, battle airline bureaucracy, and make the most of the chaos! Here’s how our trip from Lima to Madrid turned into a surprise adventure via Chile while also teaching us a thing or two about airline compensation.

The Cancellation: Lima to Madrid… or Not

Our journey started like any other bags packed, kids (somewhat) ready, and excitement to leave Peru behind for the next leg of our world adventure. But then, Iberia dropped a bombshell: Flight IB126 from Lima to Madrid was cancelled.

No warning. No preemptive rebooking. Just straight up cancelled, leaving us in limbo with no clear plan from the airline.

The reason? A “technical issue.” That’s airline speak for “we messed up, but don’t worry, we’ll get you sorted… eventually.”

The Long Wait: Iberia’s Slow Fix

After Iberia confirmed the cancellation, they put us in a hotel for the night after making us all wait hours, it was 1:30am and information was scarce, but at least we got something. But beyond that, no flight, no rebooking, no real answers, they simply didn’t know.

That’s when Ali took matters into her own hands.

At 1:50AM, while the rest of us tried to sleep, she spent two hours on the phone with Iberia, refusing to let them fob us off with vague answers. Agent after agent, transfers, hold music it was a battle of patience, and Ali was determined not to lose.

After a ridiculous amount of back and forth, she finally got Iberia to confirm a rerouted flight for us through Latham, not direct to Madrid, of course, but through Santiago, Chile.

Absolute beast mode!

The Reroute: Lima → Chile → Madrid

The morning after!

We arrived at the airport the next morning, thinking we were good to go… but no.

Latam could see the booking reference, but not our actual tickets Iberia didn’t press go…

So, off to the Iberia desk we went, hoping for a quick fix. Nope. Iberia staff shrugged and told us they couldn’t do anything, saying we had to wait for an email about an official re-cancellation (whatever that means).

Cue more waiting. More confusion. More frustration.

At this point, Ali called Iberia again, and after another hour long battle, they finally sorted the tickets.

By the time we got our boarding passes in hand and headed toward security, we were late for check in beyond exhausted and not sitting together but at least finally on our way to Madrid.

What Iberia Owes Us (And What YOU Should Know If This Happens to You!)

Under EU261/2004, Iberia must pay €600 per person for the cancellation and rerouting delay. Since they provided a hotel but left us scrambling at the airport for tickets, they also owe compensation for meals, transport, and any other reasonable expenses.

Here’s what you’re entitled to if your flight gets cancelled:

€600 per passenger for cancellations under Iberia’s control

A rebooked flight OR a full refund

Hotel accommodation if you’re stranded overnight

Meals and refreshments while waiting

Transport to and from the hotel

Reimbursement for any out-of-pocket costs

If an airline cancels your flight, they are legally required to provide these things. If they refuse, you can escalate your claim to AESA (Spain’s Aviation Authority).

While seeing an extra country wasn’t the worst outcome, the stress of rerouting, rescheduling, and chasing compensation was definitely not part of our original itinerary. Flight cancellations happen but knowing your rights makes all the difference.

Now, the real challenge begins: getting Iberia to actually pay up. Stay tuned!

Have you ever had a flight cancelled and had to fight for compensation? Drop your horror stories in the comments

we’d love to hear them!

It’s nearly 1am and flight cancelled….. not sure what to think, I’ll save that for my next post.

Update 23:45

Plane cancelled, sounds like from the hearsay we are getting a replacement flight…

We shall wait and see.

Update: 22:28pm

So our flight boarded, then un-boarded at 8:50pm because the aeroplane was broken and now the limited information translated from Spanish by some random person is it’s broken for three hours while they fix it, pretty frustrating but rather they fixed it then flew the plane knackered.

Kids are a bit grumpy as quite late now, we had planned a flight time with their bedtime. It’s now 10:28 and it’s incredibly frustrating but we would rather be safe or sorry, so it’s a bit of a delay we hadn’t factored in but at least we haven’t got a connection flight like many other people will have!

…..

As we step onto our flight out of South America today, we leave behind not just Peru, but an entire chapter of our journey one filled with towering peaks, ancient ruins, and a mix of wonder and frustration. Peru gave us breathtaking sights and moments of awe, but it also left us with a lingering sense of neglect, a country rich in history yet weighed down by decay and survival rather than progress.

But before Japan, there was one Andean stop that took us by surprise: La Paz, Bolivia I’ll go in to the details in a second.

Peru: A Country of Contrasts

The Highs: The Moments That Took Our Breath Away (Sometimes Literally!)

• Machu Picchu: As Magical As Promised – Even after all the photos, all the hype, seeing it in person was surreal. The mist lifting, the ruins revealing themselves, the sheer scale of it all—it’s something we’ll never forget. And yes, we bussed it instead of hiking, but that didn’t take away from the experience one bit.

• Cusco’s Timeless Charm – This city had layers. One minute we were standing in a bustling market, the next we were exploring a centuries-old temple. It was a place where history was woven into everyday life, and we loved it.

• The Sacred Valley: An Open-Air Museum – From the salt terraces of Maras to the fortress of Ollantaytambo, every stop was like turning the pages of an ancient book. And with far fewer crowds than Machu Picchu, some moments felt almost private, like we’d stumbled upon something the world hadn’t fully discovered yet.

• La Paz: A Wild Card We Didn’t Expect to Love , While technically Bolivia, La Paz felt like an extension of our Andean adventure. And wow, what a city. The cable cars gave us some of the most epic views of any city we’ve been to like a real-life sci-fi metropolis in the mountains. The streets were hectic but alive, the altitude was intense but manageable, and somehow, despite the chaos, it all worked.

The Lows: The Other Side of Peru

• A Country That Feels Left Behind, There was an undeniable sense of neglect in many places we visited. Buildings crumbling, streets filled with rubbish, an air of resignation rather than hope. It was a stark contrast to the pride we’ve felt in other countries here, it often felt like people were just getting by, Lima is a mix of posh and poor but as a place it’s well worth a visit.

• Rubbish Everywhere outside Lima, We weren’t expecting pristine streets, but the sheer amount of waste was hard to ignore. Piles of it, even in otherwise beautiful areas. It made us wonder why does a country with such a rich heritage feel so abandoned?

• Altitude? Surprisingly Fine! We braced for the worst, but maybe because we bussed up from sea level to 5000m rather than fly it didn’t hit us like getting out of a plane?. A few deep breaths here and there, but overall? We handled it well.

Peru and Bolivia gave us moments we’ll carry forever. But now, it’s time for something completely different.

A Two-Day Madrid Stopover: A Taste of Spain

Before Japan, we will have two days in Madrid which should be just enough time to enjoy a small slice of Spain without feeling rushed between flights and give time to regenerate.

Madrid will be a palate cleanser, a brief pause before jumping headfirst into a whole new culture.

In 2 days from posting this it’s, onwards to Japan: A Total Reset

Swapping the Andes to Europe, and then stepping into a world that couldn’t be more different Japan will be a head spinner.

I mean Peru and Bolivia were raw, rugged, and steeped in ancient history. Japan will be futuristic, structured, and endlessly fascinating.

From Incan ruins to Shibuya’s digital billboards, llama-filled valleys to Tokyo’s bullet trains, this next chapter is set to be a complete contrast, and we’re ready for it.

Stay tuned the adventure is about to take a whole new turn!

As our journey in Peru enters its last few days I find myself wanting to quote from ‘Open All Hours’, “It’s been a funny old day,” for us “it’s been a funny old journey through Peru” full of unexpected twists, turns, and plenty of surprises along the way.

We’ve marvelled at the mystical beauty of Machu Picchu, captivated by ancient Incan ruins nestled within misty mountains, and been enchanted by the vivid culture and stunning landscapes of the Sacred Valley. The exhilaration of paragliding across the sand dunes, eve vibrant Lima all combined to make our experience unforgettable.

Yet… we’ve also navigated some rougher terrain, roads that felt like they’d swallow our luggage whole and traffic jams chaotic enough to test even the calmest of nerves, narrow mountain roads, land slides and detours round who knows where. The saddest part about Peru is the lack of respect local people have in Peru, rubbish everywhere because it’s ok to just dump it where you like and everything is half finished with a that will do attitude it could be so much more if people just started living rather than surviving and yes, it’s partly down to lack of money but it’s also culturally ok to be a slob, that said, these challenging moments have left us with some cracking stories to share down the road,

Looking ahead…

As I type this we start to pack our bags packed once more, we will fly back to Lima in two days staying at a place with a pool to relax before embarking on the next leg.

Next stop, Madrid!

Two leisurely days await us in this buzzing European hub, we planned a stop perfect for stretching our legs, exploring charming streets, sipping coffees in cosy cafes, and soaking up the unique European vibe. It’ll be just the recharge we need before heading onwards to Asia.

And then, it’s wheels-up to Osaka our next thrilling adventure awaits. We’ll be heading to a world-schooling hub where we’ll dive into the local culture, explore fascinating sites, and connect with other travelling families. In the words of Arkwright, “It’s amazing how quickly things can change round here.” Japan’s precision, cleanliness, and lively culture are bound to be an absolute treat. We can’t wait to tuck into the mouthwatering delights of this city known as the “Kitchen of Japan,” from fluffy pancakes to deliciously crisp takoyaki. The girls are counting down to diving into the neon-lit, vibrant arcades packed with toys and games, and we’re all excited about the chance to immerse ourselves in a fascinating blend of traditional culture and futuristic innovation.

Japan’s arcades, markets, historic temples, and culinary adventures promise endless fun and learning opportunities. We can hardly wait for the change of pace and water you can drink from a tap!

Bring on the adventure!

Today, we set off from Ollantaytambo on the train to Machu Picchu, and what a journey it was! The girls kept themselves entertained by stacking and playing with cups, while we gazed out at the breathtaking scenery unfolding outside. Towering mountains, lush valleys, and the winding Urubamba River made for an unforgettable ride.

Until tomorrow, when we finally step into the lost city of the Incas!

After a long bus journey from Puno that stretched across the entire day filled with scenic stops and endless winding roads we finally arrived in Cusco late in the evening. Tired but excited, we checked into our accommodation before heading straight out for a quick wander around the main square.

Plaza de Armas, the heart of Cusco, was simply breathtaking. The colonial buildings and grand cathedrals were beautifully illuminated, their reflections shimmering on the rain kissed cobblestones. There was a light drizzle in the air, just enough to give the square a magical sparkle under the glow of the streetlights. Even though we were exhausted from the journey, that first glimpse of Cusco made it all worth it.

We kicked off the next morning with breakfast, then took a slow stroll through the streets, soaking in the energy of the city. The blend of Incan stonework and Spanish colonial architecture gave Cusco a unique charm, and every alley seemed to whisper stories of the past.

At some point, we decided to grab a Starbucks coffee because, why not? Well, turns out that was a terrible idea. Both Ali and I got guts ache from it. The irony wasn’t lost on us, after days of eating at tiny local spots that looked like they’d never seen a health inspection, we had fine. But one Starbucks coffee nearly knocked us out. Lesson learned stick to the hole in the wall eateries.

We joined a walking tour to properly explore Cusco’s history. The guide was fantastic, weaving tales of Incan legends and colonial conquest as we wandered through the city’s cobbled streets.

One of the most fascinating things we learned was how the Incas designed their walls not just with precise stonework that has withstood centuries of earthquakes but with hidden figures built into them. The most famous of these is the shape of a puma, a sacred animal to the Incas, which is still visible today in the ancient walls of Cusco.

Unfortunately, I had to bail before the tour ended due to some urgent toilet requirements (likely still Starbucks related), but Ali powered through to the end. Later in the evening, she ended up feeling even worse, so it was a rough end to what should have otherwise been an amazing day.

Now, as we settle in for the night, we’re gearing up for tomorrow’s adventure taking a taxi out to the Sacred Valley. Despite the sickness setbacks, Cusco has already made a strong impression on us. From its breathtaking main square to its deep rooted history, we’re excited to see what the next few days bring, after we visit Mecca Picchu we have a few days to kill so might just end up back here

(no more Starbucks though)

After leaving the high altitude shores of Lake Titicaca in Puno, we boarded a bus bound for Copacabana, Bolivia. Copacabana is a curious little town part backpacker haven, part religious pilgrimage site. But for us, it was a place to pause. We skipped the chaos of the main streets and instead found a quiet spot by the lake, soaking in the peacefulness away from the bustle. The food was simple but delicious, and best of all, ridiculously cheap. It was the kind of place where you could sit back, breathe in the mountain air, and just exist for a little while.

The next afternoon, we packed up again and caught the evening bus to La Paz. What should have been a fairly standard journey turned into something far more memorable.

A few hours into the trip, we reached the Strait of Tiquina, a narrow waterway that separates the two parts of Lake Titicaca. This is where things took an unexpected turn. Instead of a bridge, buses and larger vehicles cross the strait on massive wooden rafts yes, actual wooden rafts, bobbing along the water, carrying fully loaded buses.

We were told to disembark and take a small passenger boat across while the bus made its own precarious journey. As we watched our bus creak its way onto the raft, the guide casually remarked, “If the raft doesn’t sink, your belongings will be waiting for you on the other side!” A comforting thought, indeed.

The crossing itself was short but surreal. The raft, powered by a tiny outboard motor, wobbled across the water while we nervously watched from our much more stable passenger boat. Thankfully, our bus did make it safely across, and we continued our journey.

Bus on a raft, the green blob in the middle.

As we rattled through the Bolivian countryside late into the night, the road twisted and turned through the mountains. Then, as we descended into La Paz, the view was nothing short of magical. The city is built inside a vast basin, with countless lights twinkling like stars on the steep hillsides.

Despite it being 10 PM, the city was alive. Markets still bustled, food stalls sent plumes of steam into the cool night air, and colectivos (shared minibuses) zoomed past as if rush hour never ended. La Paz doesn’t seem to sleep it just hums with energy at all hours, far too much for a tired Englishman who could only think about a bed..

We finally arrived at our accommodation, exhausted. The journey had been anything but ordinary. I mean where else do you see floating buses on wooden rafts and the breathtaking cityscape that are so amazing.

As I pen this out we only have a short time La Paz, and we but we cannot wait to see what else this chaotic, vibrant city has in store.

Some days on the road call for adventure, and others for a slow start. Today, we embraced a bit of both. The morning was lazy and relaxed, with a leisurely breakfast and some much needed rest in our room before heading out at lunchtime.

For lunch, we ventured into town and stumbled upon a hidden gem a local restaurant with a stunning patio area and prices that seemed almost too good to be true (reoccurring theme here). The meal was fresh, flavorful, and a reminder of how incredible food can be when prepared simply but with care. Refueled and ready, we set off for the next part of our adventure.

On the way to Sillustani, we had the privilege of visiting a traditional Andean home, one that still operates as it did over 500 years ago. Life here is simple but deeply connected to the land. The house, made of adobe bricks with a thatched roof, had a central hearth for cooking, clay pots for storing food, and an unmistakable warmth that spoke of generations who had lived there before.

We watched as the family tended to their animals alpacas and guinea pigs, both integral to Andean life and demonstrated traditional weaving and cooking techniques passed down for centuries. It was humbling to see a way of life that has remained unchanged despite the march of time.

Our journey continued to Sillustani, an ancient archaeological site that pre dates the Incas but was later incorporated into their vast empire. The site, sitting at a dizzying 4,000 meters above sea level, was once a crucial settlement, used for ceremonial and agricultural purposes.

Sillustani features well preserved stone terraces, intricate water channels, and structures that align with the stars evidence of the advanced engineering and astronomical knowledge of its builders. Walking through the ruins, we could almost picture life as it once was farmers tending to the land, priests performing rituals to honor the sun and mountains, and the hum of daily life against the backdrop of the Andes.

As we explored, we couldn’t help but draw comparisons to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The rugged cliffs and vast green open landscapes that felt familiar yet unique, infused with the spirit of the Andes. The air was noticeably thin at this altitude, but everyone handled it like champs, we too our time and soaking in the scenery took some amazing pictures then headed back to the bus.

By the time we left, we felt not only physically exhausted but also enriched by the experience we really enjoyed it. From the warmth of a traditional home to the grandeur of an ancient civilization, today was a reminder of why we travel it is not just to see new places, but to connect with the past, experience different ways of life, and appreciate the beauty that exists all around us.

Would we do today all over again? In a heartbeat.

Arequipa had been good to us, but it was time to move on. With alarms set for an ungodly hour, we dragged ourselves out of bed and stumbled onto a 5 AM bus bound for Puno. As we wound our way through the mountains, the world outside gradually came to life. The landscape shifted from the dramatic volcano guarded valleys of Arequipa to the vast, windswept altiplano, where the sky feels enormous and the air noticeably thinner.

The journey took around six hours, with the bus weaving its way through high altitude plains dotted with llamas and tiny Andean villages. As the sun rose, the light cast long shadows across the mountains, and despite our exhaustion, we couldn’t help but be in awe of the scenery.

Puno sits at a dizzying 3,800 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest cities in the world. The thin air hits you as soon as you step off the bus, but our first concern wasn’t altitude it was warmth. Many hotels and hostels in Puno don’t have heating, and hot water isn’t always a given, which can be a brutal reality when nighttime temperatures drop.

Thankfully, our three star “whoop” hotel had both. It might not have been luxury, but after a long journey, a guaranteed hot shower felt like five star treatment, and to be fair finding a hotel that has stars is rare here!

After settling in, we wasted no time in heading out to explore the highlight of Puno, Lake Titicaca. This legendary body of water the highest navigable lake in the world feels almost mythical, its deep blue expanse stretching out under the Andean sky.

We took a boat tour out to the Uros Floating Islands, a surreal collection of man-made islands constructed entirely from totora reeds. Stepping onto one felt like walking on a giant sponge, the reeds shifting beneath our feet. The locals explained how they constantly add fresh layers to keep the islands afloat, a tradition that has been passed down for generations.

Not only did we get to stand on these remarkable islands, but we also took a ride on a traditional reed boat, drifting across the lake in a vessel that looked like something out of an ancient legend. It was a surreal experience something you can’t quite believe is real until you do it.

After a long day on the lake, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner. We found a swanky restaurant in Puno that served portions larger than any human should reasonably attempt to eat. Plates piled high with Andean specialities,

When the bill came, we could hardly believe it just £24 for all of us. For that price, we had eaten like kings, and we rolled out of the restaurant feeling thoroughly defeated by the sheer quantity of food and slightly embarrassed at how much we left!

Stuffed and exhausted, we made our way back to the hotel, ready for a well earned night’s sleep.

Tomorrow, another adventure awaits, but for now, sleep….

Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Our two day adventure into Colca Canyon was a journey through Peru’s breathtaking landscapes, but we never expected to get as close to the legendary Andean condors as we did. Seeing these magnificent birds soaring over the canyon is always a bit of a gamble some visitors wait hours without spotting one most trek or visit without ever seeing one. But we were about to experience something incredibly rare.

Day One: Into the Mountains

The trip began with a long drive from Arequipa into the towering Andean mountains. As we climbed higher, we made stops at various viewpoints, including the breathtaking 5,000-meter pass. At that altitude, the air was thin, and we all felt it lightheaded, sluggish, and just a little worse for wear, Dotty was sick, but recovered fast to our relief (though we later found out I left her straw out of her drink) which didn’t help her at all, epic fail on my part!

Ali had pounding headaches and Georgia just moaned (but there’s nothing new there). However, the stunning views made up for it. Snow capped peaks stretched in every direction, and the sense of vastness was overwhelming the landscape was striking rugged and endless.

By late afternoon, we were glad to be at a much lower altitude (3590 meters) where we arrived at our overnight stay at Magico, a small town nestled in the mountains. The moment we stepped inside the very basic accommodation the skies opened up, and the rain began to fall a steady downpour started that would last the entire night. Despite the storm, we enjoyed dinner in the highest Irish pub in the world(weird right) and then had an early night, knowing we had a 5 AM start ahead of us.

Day Two: The Condor Chase

At dawn, we boarded our bus in bright sunshine completely different from the stormy night before. As we made our way deeper into the canyon, we encountered small rockslides on the road, a common sight in this rugged terrain. At one point, I even had to jump out and help clear rocks to keep us moving a unique little moment that added to the adventure.

We made a few scenic stops before finally arriving at Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest canyons and a prime spot for condor sightings. At first, the sky was empty. Then, after about 15 minutes, we spotted two birds high above, circling in the distance. Before we knew it, they had drifted lower until one landed less than five meters away Georgia.

It was a juvenile Andean condor, still developing the iconic white collar that marks an adult. Georgia was quick to get snap with this rare visitor before it took off again, joining another condor in the air. We watched in awe as they swooped, played, and glided through the canyon. (This pics on Ali’s phone, I’ll upload them later)

The best was yet to come.

Our host, seemed confident that he could find more, he suggested a short hike to another viewpoint not typical for a bus tour so we were alone walking on the cliffs just 9 people and the rugged terrain. We set off on a 40-minute walk, but within less than 20 minutes, we were rewarded two adult condors who appeared in the sky, gliding effortlessly just 20 feet from us!

Seeing condors was a special experience, but getting this close is exceptionally rare we were told. These massive birds one of the largest flying creatures in the world and usually keep their distance from humans. The fact that we not only saw multiple condors but had them soaring just above our heads was unbelievable.

I managed to capture some incredible photos, but no picture can truly convey the feeling of standing so close to these majestic birds, watching them ride the thermals with effortless grace.

we continued our bus journey, stopping at a few more viewpoints before making the long trek back to Arequipa. By the time we arrived, we were utterly exhausted but completely overjoyed.

This trip gave us an extremely rare, up close encounter with one of the most iconic birds on the planet.

For anyone visiting Peru, a trip to Colca Canyon is always worth it. But if you’re lucky really lucky you might just find yourself standing mere meters away from an Andean condor, witnessing the true magic of the wild.

After the disaster that is Nazca, we needed a reset. Somewhere to shake off the frustration, breathe a little deeper, and remind ourselves of why we’re doing this because I can tell you now it isn’t to wade through streets of poo and rubbish and call that culture! (Looking at Nazca).

after our over night bus that I have now called (escape from Nazca) that was an amazing bus journey, I might do a separate post on that one day but for now back to the story.

I am now posting having been in Arequipa a few days, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like a weight had lifted. The streets are calm, clean but still full of life, the architecture is beautiful, and there’s just something about the place that makes you want to explore. After the chaos, sewage and letdowns of the past week, this city has been exactly what we needed.

Arequipa is known as La Ciudad Blanca The White City because of its dazzling colonial buildings made from volcanic stone. Walking through its streets, everything feels open and inviting, with wide plazas, intricate facades, and a sense of history woven into every alleyway.

The Plaza de Armas is stunning, with its grand cathedral stretching across one side and arcades framing the square. It’s the kind of place you could sit for hours, just watching life unfold. Locals chatting on benches, street performers drawing a small crowd, people going about their day there’s a rhythm to it all that feels effortless.

Arequipa has that perfect mix of history and atmosphere that makes it easy to just be. We’ve spent our time getting lost in the side streets, stumbling upon hidden courtyards, and soaking in the beauty of the old buildings they are something special.

One of the highlights so far has been the Santa Catalina Monastery. It’s a city within a city a labyrinth of brightly painted walls, peaceful courtyards, and tiny rooms that once housed nuns in near total isolation. It’s quiet, but not in a sombre way. More like stepping into another time, where life moved slower, and every corner tells a story.

The monastery is massive, full of little details that make you pause a blue washed alley here, a sunlit archway there. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget about time for a while and for us, nearly 5 hours rolled by before we knew it!

It’s funny how quickly things can turn around. A few days ago, we were stuck in a place that felt completely wrong for more reasons than I can even list, we were frustrated and disappointed / sad for how people live and yet now, we are somewhere that just fits, this a place that has not given up on life but in fact drives forward while embracing the past.

There’s still so much to see places we haven’t explored yet, things we’ve only heard about. We haven’t spotted the famous volcanoes yet, but knowing they’re out there, watching over the city, and that just adds to the sense of something bigger. We will find you!

For now, we’re just enjoying the feeling of being in a place that is thriving and that has not given up on life. if the rest of our time here is anything like these first few days, we might just have found one of our favourite stops yet.

Onwards and upwards!

P.s I took my phone to some local shop, who on the face of it looked more dodgy than Del Boy but as asked they replaced the battery for 30 quid, and to be honest they we’re good at their job, I watched them fix my phone and it felt cheap to me and having replaced many phone batteries in my time I could see they did everything correct.

Speaking to our Airbnb owner tonight, though, he said I was ripped off! Honestly I think it was cheap, what do you think?
