After arriving in Tokyo by train yesterday and settling into our accommodation, today was all about easing into the magic. With Tokyo Disneyland on the cards tomorrow, we decided to have a more relaxed day exploring the area, scouting out Disney spots, and building the excitement step by step.

We began our day with a gentle stroll through a nearby park. It gave us a lovely breath of fresh air and a moment to slow down after yesterday’s travel. The girls had a good run around, which is always a bonus when you’re travelling with little legs that need to move.

Next up, we made our way to Ikspiari Disney’s colourful shopping and dining complex just outside the parks. It’s packed with Disney themed shops, unique merch, and heaps of energy. We scoped out all the stores, picked up a few fun bits, and mentally noted about a dozen things Georgia wants to come back for. Honestly, it’s hard not to get swept up in the magic even the grown ups were wide eyed, excitement filled the air!.

For lunch, we popped into the Rainforest Café, right inside Ikspiari. It’s a jungle themed restaurant that feels like something between a tropical holiday and a Disney animation complete with trumpeting elephants, moving gorillas, vines overhead, and the occasional indoor thunderstorm. Dotty was mesmerised scared and sometimes just confused, and Georgia couldn’t stop giggling when the gorilla roared during dinner. Food was good too hearty American style meals with kid friendly choices.

With full bellies and happy hearts, we decided to check out a movie at the United Cinemas across the way and luck was on our side. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was showing in English! Georgia was hooked from the very first frame, and even we thought it held up better than expected. Dotty sat through the whole thing like a total champ, she surprises us sometimes we had expected one of us would have had an early exit as is normally the case!

Resting Up for the Main Event

After a little wander to stretch our legs and a stop for snacks, we headed back to our accommodation for an early night. Tomorrow, we’re off to Tokyo Disneyland, and we all know that’s going to be a full on, joy filled, probably a bit emotional kind of day, well 2 days!.

We’re calling this day the calm before the Disney storm and what a beautiful, jungle-filled, movie watching calm it was.

Dutch Windmill Adventure in Zaanse Schans

Leaving Amsterdam, we couldn’t resist a quick detour to Zaanse Schans in Zaandam it simply wouldn’t have been a proper Dutch adventure without it! Picture this: rows of storybook windmills standing proud against the chilly winter air, their massive sails slowly turning like they were winking at us. Zaanse Schans is a living museum showcasing how these 18th- and 19th-century windmills powered everything from spice grinding to wood cutting and oil pressing. Talk about wind with purpose!

The cold nipped at our noses (and possibly froze our toes), but it couldn’t dim the charm of the place. Bundled up in coats, gloves, we joined the crowd, snapping pictures and exploring the old buildings. To escape the icy breeze, we ducked into the canteen for lunch. Nothing fancy, but warm soup and crusty bread never tasted so good when you’re thawing out after a chilly stroll. We laughed about the cold, and spoke to Georgia about the big windmill sails their purpose and why they were so important in draining the marshes.

It was an impressive place, but it’s a real tourist trap, if we had known we might have looked for a more authentic place, still we saw what live would have been like 100 years ago and it was exceptionally well laid out, just so many tourists even in the bitter January cold!

From there, it was back on the road, leaving the Netherlands behind and heading towards Ghent, Belgium. The drive was a quiet moment of reflection and snacks the “Are we there yet?” questions were kept to a minimum. And the closer we got to Ghent, the more the excitement built. New country, new adventures, and yes, a sneaky promise of waffles and chocolate to keep spirits high.

Zaandam’s windmills? Tick. Fun, laughter, and frozen noses? Double tick. Belgium, get ready for us!

Have you ever had a day that didn’t go as planned but still turned out to be ok? Our second day at the ski resort had all the elements of a snowy adventure: icy roads, a minor car accident, and a sledge session on a ski slope.

Here’s how we turned a frosty mishap into fun and some tips for staying safe on icy roads and making the most of unexpected moments during your travels.

We started our day slow and cozy, enjoying a lazy morning before having lunch. Snow tubing was on the agenda, but icy roads had a surprise in store for us. Just after exiting a roundabout, a car skidded and clipped our rear bumper. While our bumper cracked, we counted ourselves lucky his car suffered much worse damage after being rear-ended too. Despite the chaos, no one was hurt, and every car managed to drive away safely.

After sorting out insurance and gathering our nerves, we continued to the tubing spot, only to find it closed due to -7°C weather and high winds. Not ones to let the day go to waste, we grabbed our sledge board and made our way to the ski slope. What followed was good fun, racing down the slopes trying to avoid the chaos and listening to the screams echoing through the chilly air.

We returned home with rosy cheeks and stories to tell, calling insurance over a comforting homemade dinner. It wasn’t the day we planned, but it’s one we’ll remember.

Waking up in Klínovec was like stepping into a snow globe. As I mentioned yesterday, six inches of fresh snow had transformed the landscape into a magical winter wonderland. After breakfast, we decided to embrace the day and rent a sledge for some snowy fun.

Renting the sledge turned into a bit of an adventure. With no Czech skills on my part and minimal English on the shopkeeper’s, we relied on some enthusiastic hand signals to figure it out. Thankfully, we got there in the end, and soon we were ready to tackle the snowy hills with our new wooden sledge.

The runs leading to the main slopes were long, winding, and full of life, with others enjoying them just as much as we were. Georgia and I spent the morning zipping down the hills, the cold air in our faces and laughter echoing through the snow. Dotty, on the other hand, was content pottering about refusing glove and unsure about exploring the fluffy white wonderland.

By lunchtime, we were ready for a break. We headed to the ski lodge to warm up and refuel, enjoying the view of skiers gracefully weaving down the slopes. The atmosphere was perfect, but Dotty soon after lunch decided it was nap time. Ali took her back to the car while Georgia and I carried on sledging for a couple more hours.

The sledge itself brought back memories of a colleague back in the UK who had purchased one years ago (that looked like our rented one) but I don’t think he ever got to use it due to the lack of snow. Let me tell you these wooden sledges are amazing. Sledging was an absolute blast!

I don’t know what it is but there is something magical about racing down a hill with the wind in your face, surrounded by snow sat on a box. Don’t just take my word for it, watch the video and see for yourself how much fun we had! Sadly I never got on the slopes but maybe another time!

As the day came to an end, we reluctantly packed up at about 3:30 and headed back, still buzzing from the fun and feeling rosy-cheeked from all the fresh mountain air. With the snow piling up and the temperatures staying well below freezing, tomorrow promises more snowy adventures.

Perhaps we’ll find another hill to conquer or try something new whatever it is, Klínovec is sure to deliver, until tomorrow.

Leaving Prague was bittersweet, this city never fails to charm. Before we set off, we had one last adventure at Prague Castle. Navigating the roads there was an experience unsure whether it was our turn or the trams’, we managed to make it through with a bit of improvisation.

The castle itself? Simply stunning after looking around Ali and Georgia ventured up the bell tower of St. Vitus Cathedral, soaking in the views that I’m told were breathtaking views. Meanwhile, Dotty and I embraced a more grounded approach, enjoying a slice of cake and some coffee (juice for her, of course) in the courtyard café, marvelling at the grandeur around us.

Upon reflection it’s clear to say that Prague truly leaves you wanting more, with its cobblestone streets, majestic landmarks, and the bustling vibe of a city that feels alive in every corner. The weather was peculiar today, very hot as we drove away it was still hovering around 11 or 12 degrees, not the – we had been accustomed to over the last few weeks, it felt surprisingly warm for January. But what awaited us in Klínovec was a different world entirely.

We arrived around 4 PM to heavy rain and 7 degrees there was remnants of snow from previous weeks, now very slushy and wet. After unpacking, I took a quick trip across the border into Germany to pick up some dinner (the nearest supermarket). The drive through the hills was surreal, with thick fog clinging to the slopes, making the whole scene feel straight out of a movie I didn’t even see the border checkpoint (typically they are unmanned but not always)

Anyhow, by the time I returned and got the kids to bed, winter had fully reasserted itself. Glancing out the window, I saw two inches of fresh snow already blanketing the ground and I was glad I went shopping before putting kids to bed!. By the morning, that had doubled to five inches. Klínovec has no intention of letting the snow go away, with daytime temperatures predicted to linger at -5°C for the week ahead.

Tomorrow might just call for a classic winter adventure so I’ll be looking to rent a toboggan or sledge for some fun in the hills. Here’s to embracing the frosty charm of this beautiful region!

After an eventful day of rescuing elves (yes, really!), we made our way to a cozy apartment near Plitvice Lakes, booked through Booking.com. With the snow still blanketing the ground from the previous week, the entire area looked like a scene out of a winter fairytale.

The next morning, we set out to explore the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park. The hills dusted in snow made the emerald waters of the lakes shimmer even more beautifully. We strolled along the trails, marvelling at the cascading waterfalls and taking in the serenity of the surroundings. After some quality time soaking in the views, we grabbed a comforting hot chocolate while waiting for the boat that would ferry us across the lake. The short ride was peaceful and gave us a new perspective of the landscape before we hopped on a bus back to the starting point.

With Plitvice behind us, we hit the road again for our next stop: Camp Terme Jezerčica. After about two hours of driving, we arrived at the family-friendly resort, and Georgia’s eyes lit up the moment she spotted the indoor pool. It was nearly 5 PM, and while the outdoor waterpark was closed for the winter, the resort’s indoor offerings were more than enough to keep us entertained.

We quickly changed into our swim gear and headed to the pools, which included three indoor heated options, a dedicated kids’ area, and even indoor slides. The evening turned into a splash filled adventure with smiles, laughter, and fun for all of us. Georgia and Dotty couldn’t get enough of the slides, and even Ali and I found ourselves caught up in the fun.

By the end of the day, we were all feeling a bit knackered, understatement of the year! but it was well worth it. From snowy landscapes to poolside adventures. Now we’re ready for whatever tomorrow brings!

Dubrovnik never ceases to amaze, blending its rich history with unexpected delights. From exploring Game of Thrones filming locations to ice skating by the beach, Day 2 offered the perfect mix of fantasy, family fun, and adventure. Whether you’re a fan of epic TV dramas or just love discovering something unique, Dubrovnik seems to have it all.

Our day began with a journey through the iconic Old City, where we joined a Game of Thrones tour. Walking through these narrow, sunlit streets, it was easy to imagine being transported to Westeros. We stood at the gates of the Red Keep, retraced Cersei’s infamous “Walk of Shame” down the legendary steps, and heard fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from our guide (who was a shitless slave). Even without watching the show, the city’s medieval charm is enough to captivate anyone. But for fans like me, it was pure magic to see the locations brought to life.

After soaking in the fantasy world, we shifted gears and made a stop at a local play area. Georgia and Dotty were thrilled, burning off some energy as they ran and climbed, then we popped to a small cove where Geogia looked for sea glass (the best treasure). Their joy in these simple things reminds us why these little moments are just as important as the grand adventures.

Later in the afternoon, we decided to mix it up and caught a bus to a beach that promised a unique surprise an ice rink! Yes, ice skating by the Adriatic Sea. Georgia and I laced up our skates and spent 45 unforgettable minutes gliding (and occasionally wobbling) on the ice. It was such an amazing experience to enjoy a winter activity in this coastal paradise. For a moment, we forgot we were in sunny Croatia!

Once our legs were tired from skating, we took a peaceful walk down to the shore. The beach was serene, the waves lapping gently as we strolled along the beach. Rounding the corner, we discovered even more hidden beauty rugged cliffs meeting the clear blue waters, framed by the soft light of the late afternoon. It was the perfect way to wind down after such an eventful day where Georgia spotted Fish, Starfish and Sea Urchins in the clear water from the edge.

Dubrovnik is a city that offers surprises at every turn, blending history, nature, and family-friendly fun in ways you might not expect.

After waking up in the peaceful town of Roche-la-Molière, we decided to spend one more day enjoying the area because Dotty wasn’t feeling very well, before continuing our journey. So we took a short trip to the Château de Bouthéon, and it was an absolute treat. The crisp, sunny weather made it the perfect day to wander around and explore everything the château had to offer.

The kids had the best time! Georgia loved visiting the small farm, where she got to meet the animals, while Dotty was completely captivated by the small aquarium inside the château despite not being very well. She spent ages watching the fish swim, her. The château itself, with its historic charm and beautiful surroundings, was a lovely stop for all of us. After an amazing day, we headed back to Roche-la-Molière for one last cosy night before moving on to our next destination.

Through the Alps to Parella

The next morning, we packed up and made our way to Italy, driving through the awe-inspiring Fréjus Tunnel. Passing under the Alps, we couldn’t help but marvel at the transition from France to Italy. The scenery on the other side was breathtaking, with the rugged mountains welcoming us into a new chapter of our journey.

We arrived in the quaint village of Parella on the 23rd, where snow from last Thursday (the 16th) still blanketed the ground. It was like stepping into a winter postcard! Georgia couldn’t wait to throw on her boots and play in the snow, building snowmen and tossing snowballs until she was rosy-cheeked and giggling. Meanwhile, Dotty preferred the warm indoors, happily exploring the house and peeking out at the snowy wonderland from the windows. Parella’s charm and the lingering snow made it a peaceful and memorable stop for our family.

Today, we’re heading further south into Tuscany. Our first stop will be Pisa, where we’ll visit the iconic Leaning Tower. Georgia is determined to perfect her “holding up the tower” photo pose, and Dotty is content to tag along and enjoy the sights at her own pace. After exploring the Piazza dei Miracoli and taking in the sights, we’ll continue to Lucca, a picturesque town famous for its medieval walls and charming streets.

Lucca promises to be the perfect place to wind down after a day of exploring. We’re looking forward to strolling through its cobbled alleys, relaxing in its piazzas, and finishing the day with some delicious Tuscan food.
