After the planning, packing, and anticipation, we finally touched down in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia the start of a brand new chapter in our travels.

There’s always that mix of tiredness and excitement after a flight. We checked in, unpacked just enough to feel settled, and couldn’t resist heading straight upstairs to see what awaited us.

And what a welcome it was.First Look at the City

The infinity pool on the rooftop gave us our very first glimpse of Kuala Lumpur. As we stepped out, the skyline opened up in front of us skyscrapers stretching across the horizon, the city glowing in the evening light.

The timing couldn’t have been better. The sun was setting, painting the sky in streaks of orange, pink, and deep blue. On one side, the iconic Petronas Twin Towers were already beginning to light up, shimmering against the dusk. On the other, the KL Tower stood proudly, watching over the city.

It was one of those pinch me travel moments: bags still half unpacked, but already feeling like we’d arrived somewhere special.

Tomorrow, the adventure would begin properly. But for now, this view infinity pool blending into skyline, city lights flickering to life was enough.

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur reminded us why we travel: for moments like this. That first look at a new skyline, the excitement of being somewhere completely different, and the calm joy of sharing it.

Our adventure in Malaysia kicked off in the best possible way by heading straight to one of the city’s most famous landmarks, the Kuala Lumpur Tower (Menara KL). At 421 metres high, this giant of the skyline gave us a bird’s eye view of our new surroundings on our very first day in the capital.

There’s something magical about arriving in a new city and immediately seeing it from above. Standing at the base of the tower, with the clouds swirling overhead and the kids trying to “hold it up” with their arms out wide, we felt that familiar mix of excitement and wonder that comes with the start of any new journey.

What It’s Like at the Top

The high speed lift took us up in under a minute, and suddenly we were looking out across the whole of Kuala Lumpur. From the Observation Deck, we could spot the Petronas Twin Towers, the green canopy of Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, and the endless sprawl of the city stretching to the horizon a great way to see what it looks like from above.

Lunch by the Tower

Back on the ground, our lunch was from the food vans just outside the tower. It was simple but hit the spot, and honestly, it felt like the perfect way to kick off our stay here.

And in true tropical KL fashion, just as we finished eating and started heading back, the skies darkened. Within minutes, rain was pouring down but we’d already made it back. A lucky escape on day one!

Fun Facts About KL Tower

Height: 421m, the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world. Opened: 1995, meaning it’s been part of KL’s skyline for nearly 30 years. Hidden setting: It’s built right in Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, one of Malaysia’s oldest protected jungles in the city centre.

Did you know? The tower is still an active telecommunications hub, even while welcoming millions of visitors every year.

FAQs

Is KL Tower a good first-day activity?

Yes, it’s the perfect orientation point for Kuala Lumpur. You’ll get a feel for the city layout and spot landmarks you’ll want to explore later.

How much time should you allow?

1.5–2 hours is enough to enjoy the decks, take photos, grab a bite outside, and make it back before the tropical rain rolls in.

Is it family-friendly?

Absolutely. Kids love the height and the Sky Box adds an extra thrill.

First Impressions of Kuala Lumpur

For our first day in KL, the tower gave us exactly what we needed: a sweeping introduction to the city, some fun family moments, and even our first taste of local street-side food. It also gave us plans for day 2, open top bus!!!

If you’re planning your first day in Kuala Lumpur, make KL Tower your starting point. It’s exciting, easy to reach, and gives you the best possible view of what’s to come.

We set off early for the open-top bus and picked the Garden Route. The brief was tight. Short stops. Shade whenever we could find it. Ice cream as required. It worked.

The KL Hop-On Hop-Off Garden Route kept the walking low and the smiles high. Buses came often, which meant no clock watching. The breeze on the top deck did the heavy lifting on cooling. The kids loved the view and we loved not dragging little legs across town.

First Stop 1: Istana Negara We rolled up to the palace, grabbed a family photo by the grand gates, and watched the guards change position with serious faces and polished boots. Ten minutes later everyone had an ice cream and better moods. Toilets were nearby, shade was decent, and we hopped back on before anyone melted.

Second Stop 2: Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park

The Butterfly Park felt like stepping into a calm bubble. Rajah Brooke’s birdwings drifted over our heads like gliders and the kids spotted pupae up close. Paths were smooth and leafy, this place gave us a breather without losing the sense of adventure.

Next Stop 3: Taman Botani Perdana (Perdana Botanical Gardens)

The old Lake Gardens delivered exactly what we needed. Space. Massive play areas for the kids to explore, lawns to play on honestly the playground reset everyone’s mood we took on water we desperately needed. If you do Kuala Lumpur with kids, this is the bit to stretch out.

After ending the bus tour

we had Dinner at Cameleon Vegetarian Restaurant

We wrapped the daytime plan with plates of tasty veggie favourites that arrived fast and vanished faster. Prices were cheap. Service was brisk. Great food so refuelled without any dramas after a long day!

The day should have ended there. It didn’t. It was the eve of Independence Day and the city felt charged. After Georgia went down to sleep, I took a quick recon for a view. The roof was off limits, so at 11.30 I gently woke her and we snuck into a quiet function room on the 33rd floor. Show time. Petronas and KL Tower framed the sky while the biggest bursts lit the city. Georgia gasped more than once. When the final volley went off, it looked like the tower exploded in sparkles. For a kid, that was pure magic. For a parent, it was worth every yawn the next morning.

friendly facts

Istana Negara is the residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia’s King, and visitors usually enjoy the view from the gates and ceremonial guards.

Perdana Botanical Gardens is one of the oldest parks in the city and a regular favourite for picnics, scooters, and playtime.

Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is home to thousands of butterflies, including the striking Rajah Brooke’s birdwing.

Quick tips for parents

We carried water, hats, and a one-line calm script for tired moments. The bus did the distance so we could keep walks short. Snacks solved 80% of problems. For fireworks, simple ear protection helped keep things fun instead of overwhelming.

Tried a great Kuala Lumpur with kids route yourself? Drop it in the comments and join the newsletter for weekly family travel ideas.

Kuala Lumpur with kids worked best when we picked cool, shady stops, short rides between them, and lots of tiny breaks. With this route, Kuala Lumpur with kids felt playful, not pressured, and we ended the day on a high with Merdeka Eve fireworks.

FAQ

Was the KL Hop-On Hop-Off Garden Route good for children?

Yes. It linked shaded attractions, cut down walking, and the open-top deck kept them entertained.

Was the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park stroller friendly?

Yes. Most paths were smooth and shaded. A light stroller was fine. We went earlier and brought water.

What were easy food options near the Garden Route?

There were plenty of family-friendly places. We liked Cameleon Vegetarian Restaurant for quick, tasty dishes.

Following on from yesterday we completed the open bus tour and took the City Route today and had a nice surprise. Yesterday, when we bought our 24-hour passes at 9 am, the staff stamped them through to 12 the next day. That’s 27 hours of use for the price of 24. Being nice paid off, and it meant we could roll again this morning without rushing breakfast.

The City Route did exactly what we needed with kids in tow: short hops, big views, no faff. We cruised out of Bukit Bintang with the neon and billboards buzzing, floated past the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park (top-deck breeze doing the cooling), and kept spotting KL Tower as the bus threaded the skyline. Down by Masjid Jamek we glimpsed the river confluence and the mosque’s domes, then glided past Merdeka Square with its giant flagpole and the copper-domed Sultan Abdul Samad Building looking like old-school KL royalty. We rolled by the old white-arched railway station, clocked the National Mosque with its star-shaped roof, waved at Chinatown’s Petaling Street and Central Market, and saw Jalan Alor already warming up for dinner. The best bit with kids we got the highlights without dragging little legs across town.

After the bus we took a short walk to Berjaya Times Square. It is enormous. The monorail drops you right there and inside the mall there’s a full indoor theme park with a looping roller coaster hanging over the shops. I’ve never seen anything like it in a shopping centre. The scale is wild, the air-con is glorious, and there’s food for every mood, which makes life easy with children.

We wrapped the day at the rooftop infinity pool back at our accommodation. City skyline, warm water, happy kids, zero stress. It was the perfect cool down after a big loop around KL.

Quick tips for parents: be friendly and ask nicely our passes ran to 12 the next day and it made the whole plan smoother. Use the City Route to stitch the big hitters together without long walks. Berjaya Times Square can swallow time, so agree a plan before you go. If you’ve got access to a pool, finish with a swim to reset everyone before dinner.

Kuala Lumpur with kids works best with short hops, shade, and easy wins like Berjaya Times Square and a rooftop pool. The City Route kept the pace smooth so the day felt playful, not pressured.

FAQ

Q: Is the KL Hop On Hop Off City Route good with children?

A: Yes. Frequent buses, big landmarks to spot from the top deck, and short gaps between stops keep spirits high.

Q: Is Berjaya Times Square good for kids?

A: Yes. The indoor theme park and roller coaster are a show-stopper, and there are loads of food options. Set a time limit so you don’t lose the whole day.

Q: How do you get to Berjaya Times Square without a car?

A: The monorail stops right by it and the City Route connects nearby. It’s simple even with a buggy.

Q: What’s a good way to end a hot day in KL with kids?

A: A swim if you can. A rooftop pool is magic. Otherwise pick a shaded stop for cold drinks and a breather.

Yesterday we started at Central Market. It is bright, busy, and surprisingly easy with children. We browsed batik stalls, watched a couple of artists at work, nobody felt left out. The air con pockets inside were a gift. When the heat built up we ducked back into the cool and kept m steady.

From there we walked over to a nearby Hindu temple. The carved tower was a riot of colour, the incense drifted on the breeze, and the bells chimed as people came to pray. We kept shoulders covered, shoes off, and moved quietly. The girls were fascinated by the flowers and little trays of offerings. It was calm and welcoming, and it gave us a breather from the city.

After that we drifted down a market street lined with hawkers. It had everything. Dodgy shorts, piles of football shirts, phone cases, fans spinning on tables, and woks hitting high heat for quick plates of noodles. It was noisy and brilliant. We stuck to the busier end, kept small notes for quick purchases, and got a fresh juice and a fan each. The bargaining was friendly and the whole thing felt like a fun game.

We wrapped the walk when the heat caught up with us and grabbed a Grab back. No drama, no long stretches on foot, just bite-sized bits of KL that kept everyone happy.

Quick tips for parents: carry small notes for hawker streets; for temple visits bring a scarf or light shirt for shoulders and a bag for shoes; aim for Central Market earlier in the day when it is cooler; snack often to keep the energy steady.

Kuala Lumpur with kids works best in short bursts. Central Market for cool crafts, a respectful peek inside a Hindu temple, and a lively hawker lane for snacks and souvenirs. Keep it simple, keep it shaded, and keep the breaks coming.

FAQ

Q: Is Central Market good with children?

A: Yes. It is compact, has air conditioned sections, and there are plenty of small, low-cost souvenirs to keep kids involved.

Q: What should we wear for a Hindu temple visit?

A: Cover shoulders and knees where possible, remove shoes, move quietly, and avoid photos of people who are praying.

Q: Are hawker streets safe with a buggy?

A: They can be crowded but manageable if you go earlier and keep to the main flow. Watch for uneven paving and scooters.

Q: Can we eat street food with kids?

A: Yes if you pick busy stalls with high turnover and cook-to-order dishes. Fresh juice and simple noodles are easy wins.

We pencilled in half an hour at MinNature Malaysia and stayed three. Classic family travel plot twist. It is tucked inside Sungei Wang Plaza in Bukit Bintang and it completely hooked the kids from the moment we walked in. The team hand out little scavenger hunts with prizes for finding characters hidden in the scenes, so Georgia went full detective, scanning rooftops, train platforms and tiny street corners. Dotty, who I honestly thought would be bored or try to pull the mini cars off the streets, loved it. She pointed at tiny people, giggled at moving parts and shouted whenever she “found” she saw a button to press. We even spotted a very Mary Poppins looking figure and a certain electric yellow mouse tucked into the displays.

It is much bigger than it looks from the entrance and the build quality is high. There are heaps of tiny moving elements, little light shows on some sets and so many layers of detail that you keep noticing new things on the second and third lap. It is indoors, cool, and easy with a buggy, which buys you more time when the weather is doing its tropical thing. For the ticket price it felt like a bargain family morning that turned into most of the day.

Afterwards we wandered the attached malls, did a bit of window shopping and grabbed lunch. Four of us ate for about a tenner in total, roughly RM60. We shared an omelette on rice in the nasi goreng pattaya style, a veggie stir fry with rice, extra eggs and rice, and drinks. Five plates between four, everyone happy, wallet still smiling. Kuala Lumpur continues to win on simple food in busy places.

If you are planning it, aim to go earlier before it gets lively, set a quick meet point so no one vanishes during the hunts and bring your phone’s macro mode for close-up photos of the tiny scenes. Keep a small treat ready for when the scavenger list is done. It

Getting there is straightforward. It is in Sungei Wang Plaza in Bukit Bintang, easy by monorail or Grab. If you are riding the City Route on the hop on hop off bus, this makes a perfect cool down stop that still feels like an activity rather than just a break.

Would we go again? Yes. It is a low-fuss, high-reward win that works on hot days, rainy days or when you want something different to the usual big ticket sights. The kids were engaged for hours, we spent next to nothing on lunch, and everyone left with a smile.

When you are travelling with kids, the best days balance excitement, movement and a calm coffee for the grown-ups. Kuala Lumpur delivered exactly that for us with a combo of hands-on science, a tower-view splash and a cheeky British comfort stop in the mall.

Morning: Petrosains Discovery Centre

We started at Petrosains Discovery Centre inside Suria KLCC and absolutely loved it. The first thing you do is hop into a gentle dark-ride car. It is slow, seated and brilliant for all ages. You glide past scenes of space, oceans and Malaysia’s energy story, which sets a calm tone before the hands-on chaos.

From the ride exit we turned left and worked our way around in an anti-clockwise loop. That flow worked perfectly. The kids spent the morning tinkering with exhibits, pressing buttons, lifting things, spinning wheels and launching mini experiments. Georgia and Dotty stayed engaged the whole time.

We saved the dinosaurs for the finale. Crossing the rope bridge above the prehistoric scene was a proper highlight and finishing there made the dino reveal feel like a reward after a full morning of fun.

Why that route works

Calm start on the dark-ride Clear loop by turning left, so no backtracking Big finish with the dinosaurs for a high-five ending

Afternoon: KLCC Park Splash

Next up was the KLCC Park paddling pool under the Petronas Towers. It is free, shallow and perfect for cooling off. Pack swimmers, a small towel and a change of clothes. Watching the kids run through fountains with the towers behind them is one of those core travel memories.

Comfort Stop: A Little Slice of the UK at M&S

We ducked into Marks & Spencer in Suria KLCC for a proper breather. Coffee from the M&S Café and a Colin the Caterpillar from the Foodhall. UK favourite, in Malaysia. The kids were buzzing and the adults were quietly chuffed.

Why This Day Just Works

Learn and play at Petrosains in the morning Burn energy and cool off at the splash zone Refuel easily in the mall without extra travel

Handy Notes

Petrosains is indoors and air-conditioned, so bring a light layer for little ones. The dark-ride is slow and gentle, great for nervous riders. If it is busy, arrive early and keep the left-hand loop to save the dinosaur area for last. KLCC Park’s paddling pool is free. Lifeguards and shaded areas are usually present, but still bring hats and water.

Thoughts

Kuala Lumpur can feel big and buzzy, but this route makes it easy: science, splash, snacks. Simple to plan, great value, big smiles.

We swapped Kuala Lumpur’s city buzz for cool mountain air and a full day of family fun at the Genting Highlands. Early bus. Skyway up through the clouds. Temple stop. Then straight into Genting SkyWorlds for movie world mayhem. It is not Disney or VinWonders, but it is a cracking day out.

Getting There: Easy as a bus and a gondola ride?

We grabbed the early bus from KL, rode up to mid-hill, then jumped on the Awana SkyWay cable car for the final climb. You float over rainforest with big views only a cable car can give you, there’s a free stop at Chin Swee Temple midway which is absolutely worth a wander. Keep your ticket QR handy to reboard and continue to the top.

Chin Swee Temple: Calm in the clouds

Pagodas, giant statues, and mist drifting through the courtyard. It is peaceful, photogenic, and a nice breather before the theme park energy kicks in, it’s modern but very nice and you have to ride 9 escalators up and down to it, which tested my arms with the pushchair!

Genting SkyWorlds: Movie worlds above the clouds

First impression staff in full branded gear and performers roaming the zones, which makes everything feel alive. The theming is clean and modern across the park, even if the overall polish is a step below the big guns.

standout rides

Independence Day: Defiance, a flying-theatre style mission with big effects. I walked out grinning.

Invasion of the Planet of the Apes a trackless dark ride that drops you in the middle of the action. Cinematic and clever like your a recruit at war with humans helping the gorillas.

Georgia’s favourite. A harness-style rail ride that you can climb around and rock climb in (have to rebook on app) the Rio zone for brilliant views. Check the height guide if you’ve got littles.

Teacups, we spun silly and loved every second. If you want more classic fairground fun or a weather proof hour, the indoor Skytropolis next door is always open.

Download the Genting SkyWorlds app and book VQ (Virtual Queue) slots so you are not stuck in lines all day. It shows live waits, lets you reserve ride times, and keeps your plans tidy.

When the weather turns

It is a mountain. Showers happen. If it rains continuously for an hour during park hours, SkyWorlds runs a Rainy Day Guarantee that gives you a free return ticket within 12 months, with terms listed on their site. Handy safety net.

Home time

Cable car back through the mist, bus to the city, two very tired adults, kids still running. Easy end to a big day.

Is it worth it?

Yes. It is not Disney or VinWonders, but between the cable car views, temple stop, movie-themed rides, and friendly staff, it is a full, memorable day that families will love.

Practical info tips we wish we’d known

Layers, always: it can feel several degrees cooler at the top. A light fleece for everyone avoids grumbles late afternoon.

Pack two tiny ponchos: one for you, one for the buggy or rucksack. Mountain showers roll through fast.

First 90 minutes matter: hit your biggest targets immediately, then slow the pace after lunch when queues swell.

Snack strategy: quick bites between zones beat a long sit-down. Think fruit pouches, bars and a refillable bottle.

Battery plan: one power bank for the family + a short cable in the easy-grab pocket.

Photo wins: take a family shot before the first ride, then again at golden hour for a built-in before/after moment.

Little legs rhythm: alternate a headline ride with a gentler spinner or play area to keep energy even.

Wind-down buffer: aim to leave 20–30 minutes before you absolutely must. The stroll back is nicer unrushed.

We saved Batu Caves for our last day in KL and it could not have been better. We took grab but you can easy train to Batu Caves station, we stepped out into the heat and colour of the plaza, and made a beeline for the paid cave to the left of the station before tackling the famous stairs. That cave is often called Ramayana Cave, and for us it was the best part of the whole visit.

Inside it was cool and calm, a welcome break from the midday sun. Lights picked out dramatic formations and story scenes as we followed the path deeper in. The kids were wide-eyed, pointing at rock “curtains” and shadows that looked like animals. Starting here set the tone perfectly. It took the edge off the heat, gave us a touch of magic, and meant the big climb felt like part two rather than the whole show.

Back outside we headed to the plaza for the main event. Lord Murugan gleamed over the rainbow staircase, the air buzzing with chatter, drums and the occasional monkey skirmish. We tightened backpacks, took a sip of water and started the climb. It is 272 steps to the top. The metal rails were hot enough to make you flinch, so we paced ourselves, stopping on the landings for a breeze and a breather.

Halfway up we had to breath have a wobble, laugh, carry on. Ali carried Dotty all the way up! At the top the cave opened into a huge bowl of light and limestone. Sunbeams cut through the roof, temple drums echoed, and the girls’ voices bounced back at them from the walls. For a few minutes it felt both giant and peaceful.

On the way down we took it slower, pointing out colour on the steps and letting the kids choose our snack stop. Back at ground level we were pink-cheeked, salty and very happy. Finishing a KL trip with a climb and a cave felt right. The first cave gave us wonder and cool air, the stairs gave us a challenge and a view, and the top gave us that proud, quiet moment families remember.

Handy bits if you are going with kids

Start with the cool cave to the left as you exit the station. It is shaded, interesting and a great warm-up. Dress for temples. Shoulders and knees covered. Sarongs are available at the base if you need one. Bring water and hats. The rails and steps get very hot, so pace it with short pauses. Use a carrier, not a pram. There are a lot of stairs and some uneven ground. Monkeys are cheeky. Keep snacks zipped up and hold onto bottles and hats. Getting there. KTM Komuter train to Batu Caves station is easy, or Grab if you prefer door to door.

Hot, colourful and a tiny bit chaotic, Batu Caves gave us everything we wanted from a family day out. Doing the left-of-station cave first made all the difference. It was our calm, glowing highlight before the big climb, and a brilliant way to say goodbye to Kuala Lumpur.

We flew out of Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan in Borneo on a simple internal hop with Malaysia Airlines, and it was exactly the kind of travel day you hope for when you are moving with kids: calm, friendly and easy.

The girls were entertained from the moment we boarded. The crew handed out passport-style activity books with destinations to tick off, and between that and the window views we barely heard a peep. Georgia was chuffed working through the pages and Dotty settled straight in with colouring. Bliss.

Meals on a short domestic flight

Unlike most UK domestic flights we have taken, this one came with a proper meal service. I made the most of it with a spicy bowl that hit the spot, and Ali had the veggie option, which went down a treat. Drinks came round quickly, trays cleared fast, no drama. When you are juggling bags, crayons and passports, that kind of efficient service feels gold.

The vibe on board

Check-in and boarding were smooth and well signposted. Cabin crew were warm with the kids and happy to swap a spare pencil when ours went missing. Seat pitch was decent for a short hop, and we had enough room to spread the activity book, colouring, water bottles and the inevitable snack pack.

Landing in Sandakan

Touchdown was on time and the heat hit us the second we stepped off. That warm, humid Borneo air felt like the start of a new chapter. Bags arrived quickly, signs were clear, and we were out in no time. Exactly how family travel should be: simple, kind and fuss-free.

What worked well for us

Activity books first. Getting the kids into a task before pushback kept everything calm through take-off. Veggie meal sorted. Ali’s vegetarian tray was spot on for a short flight and saved us rummaging for snacks mid-air. Compact carry-ons. One small daypack for kid stuff (pens, wipes, water, spare top) is easier than multiple little bags. Row choice. A window seat for the older kid equals built-in entertainment over Borneo’s coastline.

Quick facts for fellow families

Route: Kuala Lumpur → Sandakan (SDK) Airline: Malaysia Airlines Type: Domestic flight On board: Meal included, hot and tasty; drinks service; friendly crew Kid bits: Activity passport book, colouring kept them content the whole way

Would we do it again?

Absolutely. As far as family flight days go, this was a 10/10 easy win. The girls were happy, we were fed, and the whole thing felt relaxed. Next stop: Borneo adventures.
