Wartburg Castle History

On our journey from Klínovec, we made a stop at Wartburg Castle, a stunning medieval fortress steeped in history and charm. Perched atop a hill overlooking the lush Thuringian Forest, Wartburg is an architectural marvel and it’s a gateway to Germanys history.

Wartburg Castle was founded in 1067 by Count Ludwig the Springer, and over the centuries, it became a symbol of political, religious, and cultural significance in Germany. Among its most famous residents was Martin Luther, who sought refuge here in 1521-1522. It was within the walls that Luther translated the New Testament into German, shaping the course of Christianity and the German language, bring all the dialects to a single one.

The castle also has ties to the legendary Minstrels’ Contest, which is told of in German folklore and Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser. The blend of myth and history draws visitors from around the globe.

In 1999, Wartburg Castle was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its exceptional preservation and the role it played in European history.

Walking through Wartburg Castle felt like stepping into a book. We joined a guided tour that brought its history to life. This gave us access to the internal rooms, perfectly preserved, from the exquisite Knight’s Hall with its grandiose decor to the modest yet powerful Luther Room, where Martin Luther undertook his groundbreaking translation work.

Georgia loved imagining princesses roaming the halls. They also enjoyed the interactive exhibits, which made history more fun for children.

We explored the Romanesque Palas, admired panoramic views from the castle ramparts, and soaked sights of this beautifully preserved medieval stronghold.

After our epic visit to Wartburg Castle, we’re now heading to Centre Parcs Hochsauerland, where we’re looking forward to some family fun amidst the stunning Sauerland region.

Budapest winter charm

Budapest in winter is pretty cold it seem, but today was the day the cold really made itself known. Was it worth braving the freezing temperatures? Absolutely.

Our day began on Castle Hill, one of Budapest’s most iconic and historic sites. This hilltop retreat, crowned by the Buda Palace, offered a stunning backdrop of the fog covered Danube and cityscape. We wandered through its cobblestone streets, taking in the grand architecture and imagining life in centuries past, loads of construction to rebuild historic buildings is ongoing and must be costing a fortune.

As the frosty air started to bite, we were saved by a local favourite chimney cakes (kürtőskalács). Ali grabbed a couple of these sweet, doughy treats, freshly roasted over open flames and coated in cinnamon sugar. Warm, soft, and absolutely delicious, they gave us the boost we needed to carry on despite the cold.

After exploring Castle Hill, our adventure continued as we dived into Budapest’s fantastic public transport system. A quick bus ride took us through the city streets, followed by a journey aboard a tram, both of which were simple to catch brought us closer to the frosted hills, where the real magic of the day awaited.

The Cogwheel Railway A Journey Through Time

Next, we hopped on the Cogwheel Railway, a charming vintage train designed to climb the steep slopes of the Buda Hills. This railway dates back to the late 19th century and has retained much of its original charm. As we chugged up the hill, the snowy scenery unfolded around us. Frosted trees lined the track, and fine snowflakes began to fall, creating a true winter wonderland.

For the kids, the Cogwheel was a bit scary but exciting at the same time, loud clunking and juddering with white trees outside made it a strange magical adventure. And at the top, the highlight of our day was waiting.

At the summit of the Cogwheel Railway, we boarded the Children’s Railway, a truly unique experience that has captivated visitors since the 1940s. Operated almost entirely by children (under adult supervision), this railway is a fascinating blend of history and charm.

The train took us deep into the snow-covered Buda Hills. As snowflakes drifted lazily through the air and the trees stood cloaked in frost, the scenery felt like something out of a fairy tale.

The young conductors and ticket collectors dressed in full uniform added to the charm. Their enthusiasm and professionalism brought a sense of nostalgia and joy to the journey and the children stood and salute at every station which added to the charm, the Children’s Railway is an absolute must-do in Budapest.

This was by far the coldest day of our travels, with temperatures biting deep and frost clinging to everything in sight. But the warmth of chimney cakes to the enchantment of the Children’s Railway, every moment made braving the chill worthwhile.

I think it’s safe to say that Budapest in winter offers a unique charm you won’t find anywhere else. Wrap up warm, embrace the frost, and experience the magic of its historic hills and its railway adventures.

Our visit to Lake Bled felt like stepping into a postcard. The serene turquoise waters, framed by snow-capped mountains, created a magical backdrop for our family adventure. Topping it all off was the majestic Castle Bled, perched high on a rocky hill, offering panoramic views that took our breath away.

We began our day at Castle Bled, exploring its rich history and marvelling at the stunning vistas of the Julian Alps and Lake Bled below. The castle itself was a treasure trove of medieval architecture, museums, and even a wine cellar where you can bottle your own wine. The sunshine lit up the lake, creating an ethereal glow, and we couldn’t resist taking dozens of photos from every angle. We spent a couple of hours immersing ourselves in the castle’s charm before heading down to the town for the next part of our adventure.

The Christmas market on the edge of the lake was pure festive magic. Stalls selling handmade gifts, ornaments, and delicious local treats lined the waterfront. The aroma of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and traditional Slovenian dishes filled the air. We decided to have lunch at the market, enjoying a hearty plates of festive food and warming up with cups of hot chocolate.

After lunch, we strolled along the lake’s shoreline, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. The lake was like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and the iconic island church at its centre. The walk was peaceful yet invigorating, a perfect way to work off our meal and take in the beauty of Lake Bled from every angle.

As the day wound down, we reluctantly said goodbye to this enchanting place, knowing it had given us memories to treasure.
