Today we said our goodbyes to Japan and to be honest, it was harder than we thought. After weeks of adventures, we’ve grown seriously fond of this beautiful country.

From the buzz of Tokyo to quiet coastal walks in Hikari, Japan has been a dream. The kids have thrived, we’ve eaten our weight in noodles and convenience store snacks, and we’ve been blown away by the hospitality, efficiency, and warmth that met us at every turn. We’re leaving with a deep love for the place, and yep we’ll definitely be back.

This morning, we packed up, lugged the bags across Tokyo one last time, and made our way to Haneda Airport. We checked in smoothly and boarded our flight to Beijing, still soaking up our final glimpses of Japan from the sky.

Now here’s where things got a bit spicy and not the food, the visa situation.

We entered China using the 10 day visa-free transit, which you don’t apply for ahead of time. It’s handled at the airport after landing and that’s exactly where things got confusing. There was a fair bit of back and forth wrong forms and we were not the only ones confused at immigration, a few raised eyebrows, and one or two counters that didn’t quite know what to do with us, however, after a bit of explaining and waiting, we were through.

I’ll pop together a separate post soon breaking down how the whole process works, and what we wish we’d known beforehand so stay tuned if you’re planning to do the same.

Once we were out of the airport, we grabbed a taxi straight to our hotel in Beijing. It was a long travel day, so we kept things simple: a short stroll around the block, some takeaway to keep the kids happy, and then lights out.

Tomorrow’s all about easing into this new chapter at a slower pace no alarms, no big plans, just soaking in Beijing one step at a time.

Let’s face it road trips with kids can be magical one minute and meltdown central the next. Whether it’s a desperate need for a toilet, a bored toddler, or a hungry partner who just spotted a fast food sign 30 miles too late, we’ve all been there. That’s exactly why we built Make My Drive Fun a free, easy to use tool that helps you find toilets, picnic spots, attractions, and family friendly stops right along your route.

Designed with travelling families in mind, this tool works on any browser and doesn’t need an app or login. Just type in your start point, and optionally an end point, and it’ll show you what’s available nearby. You can filter by categories like toilets, playgrounds, scenic stops, and quirky attractions – perfect for long drives with kids, pets, or impatient grown-ups. You can even choose how far off your route you’re willing to detour.

Real Life Use Case

While driving across Europe earlier this year, we found ourselves caught short with two kids in the back and nowhere obvious to stop. Google Maps was useless. But using our tool, we found a rest stop with clean bathrooms and a playground less than 2km off the motorway. It turned a potential disaster into one of our favourite spontaneous memories. That’s the power of this tool it turns “we need to stop!” into “I’m glad we stopped!”

Try the Tool Now

    Launch Make My Drive Fun

Share It With Fellow Travellers

This tool is completely free and always will be. If it helped you find a hidden gem, save your sanity, or score a much needed toilet break, please share it with other families, road trippers, or campervan crews. Every share helps us improve it and keep it running.

Today was one of those whirlwind days that packed in everything. We popped back into Tokyo and started strong with a visit to the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing possibly the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world! Watching the wave of people flood the intersection from all sides was absolutely wild. Georgia thought it looked like a real life video game, and honestly, she wasn’t wrong.

Next stop: Shibuya Sky Garden. The panoramic rooftop views were unreal. If you ever want to feel like a tiny human in a giant city, this is the place, we grabbed some food from the IKEA that was just outside sadly I didn’t do Swedish meatballs. It was Swedish hotdog instead which confuse me slightly but it was nice nonetheless and cheap. After grabbing some churros on the roof and soaking in the rooftop park and buildings that tower around you, we headed off.

We went on a bit of a window shopping mission, Disney Store because George didn’t get enough at the two days at Disneyland clearly, Pokémon Centre (yep, it’s as cool as it sounds) The Pokémon store was a highlight for me having a picture with Ryu I think he must be every genx life long hero!

But the real “wow” moment of the day was our trip up the Tokyo Skytree the tallest tower in Japan and the second tallest structure in the world at 634 metres! We zoomed up to 450 metres, right to the top viewing platform, and the views were just jaw dropping. We also stopped at the 350 metre observation deck, where there’s that clear glass window area I took a photo of Ali from that height, pushing the pram on the ground below. She looks like a dot. The pushchair looks like a comma. Insane!

As dusk settled in, we wandered over to the nearby Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. It was absolutely magical in the evening light lanterns glowing, incense in the air. We all had a go at the omikuji fortune slips. Dotty got the best fortune! Georgia and I both scored “good fortune.” Ali, poor thing, got a bad one and had to do the traditional fix tie it up to leave the bad luck behind.

We wound our way back through the high street, checking out quirky little shops and peeking in at the local restaurants. But after all that walking, we went full tourist and grabbed a quick dinner at McDonald’s (no regrets those Japanese fries hit differently), then caught the late train back to our Airbnb.

Big views, little fortunes, and a lot of memories. That’s Tokyo for you.

I would absolutely recommend doing any of these activities thoroughly amazing!, if you want to know any details let me know.

We did it with our two girls Georgia (7) and Dotty (4) and it struck the perfect balance of calm space and exciting discovery.

Today was a bit of a travel day as we moved from our first Airbnb near Tokyo Disneyland to our new base on the other side of the city but we packed in plenty of adventure along the way!

We kicked things off with a stop at Tokyo Station, not just to admire the iconic red brick building (which looks like a typical old British rail station) but to take a stroll through the Imperial Palace East Gardens. It’s amazing to find such a peaceful, lush space right in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world. We loved exploring the ancient stone walls and moats there was even a ninja style pretend ambush or two along the paths!

Next up: science time! Just next door is the National Museum of Science, this place is filled with interactive fun. Georgia and Dotty had fun the hands-on experiments, and the giant mechanical globe that shows real time weather and tectonic activity. Earthquake machines right around to driving simulators with motorbikes, Georgia loved the crane machine, it was huge looking like you were using a skyscraper crane you hauled balls from one side to the other.

Around 4 PM, we headed back to the station picked up our bags from Station Lockers honestly, these are an amazing. Pop your luggage in while you explore, no need to lug it around! Then it was onto two trains across Tokyo, navigating the bustling stations like pros.

We arrived at our new home in time to stretch out, settle in, and cap off the night with a delicious Indian dinner.

We’re loving how Tokyo offers something for every mood history, science, and spice, all in one go. Tomorrow, we are going back in to the city who knows what we will find?

If Day One was brilliant, Day Two ripped the roof off. We went in knowing the layout, the rhythm, and how to work the system and we squeezed every last drop of magic out of that day. No filler. Just pure fun.

We kicked things off by snagging a Premier Access pass for Monsters, Inc. locked in for 11AM. With that sorted, we wandered down to the waterfront and boarded the giant cruise ship that loops around the park.

Now when I say giant I mean this thing was massive. Like, multiple levels, full blown old timey paddle steamer vibes. You could feel the breeze, take in the sights from the water, and get this calm, grand view of the park that just hits differently. Pure Disney serenity.

Georgia was desperate to do Jungle Cruise again —mand who were we to say no? Back we went. And you know what? We noticed heaps we missed the first time, like the bloke with the ripped trousers hanging off a tree. That’s the beauty of doing it twice it’s never the same show twice.

From there, we split up again Ali and Georgia were keen to hit the Splash Mountain water ride, while Dotty and I jumped on the train for a calm ride through the lands. She absolutely loved it. Something about those gentle turns and big views had her completely relaxed, when we regrouped Georgia could not stop talking about the big drop and splash, that’s a memory locked in forever!

We wondered over for the Disney 3D show with Donald Duck a classic Disney chaos screening while wearing 3D glasses. Great way to cool off and have a giggle, water, air smells and much more make this an immersive film.

The clocks chimed and it was time, Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek. With our fast pass, we zipped through the line and launched into one of the most interactive, brilliantly themed rides of the park. Flashlights, monster spotting, hilarious little scenes the whole thing left us buzzing afterwards.

We kept lunch low-key sandwiches we’d packed ourselves, grabbed a shady spot, and had a breather. Fuelled up and ready again, I ducked off for a solo mission Star Tours.

Even with fast access, the queue was about 20 minutes but worth the wait. It’s a wild galactic tour with a different storyline each time, and this one had a cool flight sequence. I left the show grinning like a Wookiee on pay day.

As we wandered through Gaston’s Bar, we grabbed churros that were dangerously good (crispy outside, cinnamon dusted joy inside), and caught the final Duck Parade a high energy, character packed carnival that had us dancing. Costumes, colour, confetti… it was a proper party on wheels.

By the time that concluded it was the one we’d all been waiting for. Beauty and the Beast, Georgia dressed as Belle with her lantern we arrived Premier Access in hand walked straight in, and within 10 minutes we were on the ride.

Honestly, my words don’t really do it justice it’s emotional, cinematic, and stunning from the inside out. Floating through the ballroom, the “Be Our Guest” sequence, and the grand finale… it was like stepping into the film. Dotty was wide eyed, Georgia kept whispering “This is amazing,” we lived through her and we were grinning the whole way through. Honestly worth every yen, every step, every second.

While I headed off with Dotty (who had dozed off), we pulled a sneaky bit of timing strategy queued for the mine cart ride using a ticket wait system so when Ali finished I could swap and bypass the queue with a fast track as if I queued with her, a little used useful tactic and I was on board within 5 minutes of swapping, the ride was fast, twisty, and tore through glowing mines. Such a good ride with so many screams you would think people were being murdered!

Dinner was at the queen of Hearts Banquet Hall visually bonkers small portions and not the greatest meals, but your paying for the experience we figured, was it worth it, probably not but it was well designed!

From there, it was time for the grand finale. First, the electrical light parade an absolute spectacle. Float after float gliding by with thousands of lights, massive characters waving, the whole park glowing and pulsing with music. Dotty was waving at every float, Georgia’s jaw was on the floor. Ali and I were just soaking it in.

We didn’t stop there though Georgia begged for one more spin on “It’s a Small World with Groot,” so off we went again just enough time with a mere 5 minute queue to go get on and back for the finally? And yeah… it was still a banger, but after 11 hours it feels like your mind had left your body, my brain unable to process what my eyes were seeing, again Groot dancing through every culture it was the kind of weird and wonderful that Disney Japan just nails.

And finally… we raced back to the castle for the fireworks, they were ok, not as good as expected but not bad either but then… not knowing what to expect we waited darkness fell and …

The projections wrapped around Cinderella Castle like magic paint, fireworks bursting above in perfect sync with the music. You don’t just watch this show you felt it. In your chest. In your memories. It felt like a celebration of our whole two day experience that ran for 20 minutes taking you on a joyful journey that just made you smile, and it ended with one last burst that lit up the whole sky. Pure Disney magic.

And that was that, the end of 2 magical days and my words to not do it justice, we crammed loads in, used tricks of the trade to squeeze the most and safe in the knowledge we did more than we ever expected to!

As we made our way out, the cast members waved goodbye, beaming as wide as ever. There’s something truly addictive about the joy they bring every “Have a magical evening!” felt genuine.

We left tired, yes. But also completely lit up inside.

We hit Tokyo Disneyland full of energy, the Georgia practically bouncing through the gates, Dotty being snotty as normal recently and jacked up on calpol bless her.

First up, we stormed the gates had no idea what to do and turned left and fell upon Jungle Cruise in Adventureland. The wait time? A breezy 10 minutes. Our skipper didn’t speak English, but that didn’t matter her over the top enthusiasm, expressive gestures, and hilarious delivery had us laughing from start to finish sits an amazing cruise through hippos crocks pirates gorillas (planet of the apes) lion king and more! It’s wild!!.

Straight after, we wandered up into Westernland and hopped on the Western River Railroad. Again, only 10 minutes of queue time absolute dream. The train was a perfect way to get a feel for the park layout, especially for the Georgia, who loved spotting different themed areas from the comfort of her seat.

Ali took Dotty off for a break as she still wasn’t feeling it and Georgia and myself headed to Fantasyland, and there it was a Disneyland exclusive we didn’t expect to love so much: “It’s a Small World with Groot.” A limited-time Marvel-themed overlay running from January to June 2025, this version adds Groot and other Marvel characters into the classic ride, reimagined in the charming Small World style. It was an absolute mind bender, loud, quirky, colourful, and honestly felt like you were tripping while watching Groot groove through different global scenes while floating around on a boat, wild.

We told Ali we loved it so much, so, we did it again. Back to back rides, because when something hits the spot like that, you don’t walk away. The kids were captivated, and honestly, so were we, minds truly blown!

After all that fun, hunger kicked in. We headed over to the Restaurant, after lunch we split up to let Ali and Georgia have some fun so they headed for the kid’s roller coaster for a thrill, while Dotty and I hung out on the play boat, which turned out to be a fun gem. She loved exploring, climbing, and sliding honestly it brought her out of her feeling sorry for her self phase, where she was happy just watching the world go by.

Later in the afternoon, we regrouped and made our way to Goofy’s Paint ‘n’ Play House in Toontown. What a wild and colourful ride literally! You’re given a virtual paint shooter and set loose in Goofy’s madcap living room to redecorate in true Disney fashion. It wasn’t a hit with Dotty and Georgia was not impressed…,

We were not quite finished yet not by a long shot. After Goofy, we wandered into Cinderella’s Palace, soaking up the royal vibes Georgia sat on the throne, tried on a glass slipper and generally acted royal walking outside there was the carousel. There’s something timeless about a good carousel ride smiles all round, well nearly but dotty didn’t hate it.

From there, we stopped by Minnie Mouse’s house, which felt like stepping into a life sized cartoon. The girls loved peeking into her pink, polka dotted world, complete with her kitchen, living room, and a cheeky look at her wardrobe fridge cooker and more gave a crazy insight into the messed up minds at Disney

Our final adventure of the day? We boarded a raft to Tom Sawyer Island. That’s right we went full explorer mode. The kids raced through caves, climbed up into forts, and searched every nook and cranny for hidden treasure. It was the perfect end to an action packed day, with just the right mix of imagination and adventure on the island are full sized forts caves bridges and more!

As the sun dipped low, we grabbed some dinner rice chicken some veggies options and then we headed home early at 7 PM knowing we had a long one tomorrow!

Day One done and it was magic.

After arriving in Tokyo by train yesterday and settling into our accommodation, today was all about easing into the magic. With Tokyo Disneyland on the cards tomorrow, we decided to have a more relaxed day exploring the area, scouting out Disney spots, and building the excitement step by step.

We began our day with a gentle stroll through a nearby park. It gave us a lovely breath of fresh air and a moment to slow down after yesterday’s travel. The girls had a good run around, which is always a bonus when you’re travelling with little legs that need to move.

Next up, we made our way to Ikspiari Disney’s colourful shopping and dining complex just outside the parks. It’s packed with Disney themed shops, unique merch, and heaps of energy. We scoped out all the stores, picked up a few fun bits, and mentally noted about a dozen things Georgia wants to come back for. Honestly, it’s hard not to get swept up in the magic even the grown ups were wide eyed, excitement filled the air!.

For lunch, we popped into the Rainforest Café, right inside Ikspiari. It’s a jungle themed restaurant that feels like something between a tropical holiday and a Disney animation complete with trumpeting elephants, moving gorillas, vines overhead, and the occasional indoor thunderstorm. Dotty was mesmerised scared and sometimes just confused, and Georgia couldn’t stop giggling when the gorilla roared during dinner. Food was good too hearty American style meals with kid friendly choices.

With full bellies and happy hearts, we decided to check out a movie at the United Cinemas across the way and luck was on our side. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was showing in English! Georgia was hooked from the very first frame, and even we thought it held up better than expected. Dotty sat through the whole thing like a total champ, she surprises us sometimes we had expected one of us would have had an early exit as is normally the case!

Resting Up for the Main Event

After a little wander to stretch our legs and a stop for snacks, we headed back to our accommodation for an early night. Tomorrow, we’re off to Tokyo Disneyland, and we all know that’s going to be a full on, joy filled, probably a bit emotional kind of day, well 2 days!.

We’re calling this day the calm before the Disney storm and what a beautiful, jungle-filled, movie watching calm it was.

After a week of full-on exploring sometimes clocking up close to 10 miles a day we finally slowed things down a bit. And it was just what we needed.

Ali and Georgia started the day with a bit of sparkle, heading off to a Gold Leaf Class where they made their own bags decorated with delicate gold leaf. Pretty fancy! Meanwhile, Dotty and I had a cruisier morning at the park. Swings, slides, and a heap of giggles made for a top little outing.

We all met back up at Castle Park for a laid-back picnic under the blossoms. There’s something seriously special about Kanazawa’s parks peaceful, picturesque, and perfect for recharging.

After lunch, we had a gentle wander around the city’s historic wall gates, admired the blossom, and pottered through some local shops. No rush, no fuss just enjoying the day.

We wrapped up a bit earlier than usual, which was a welcome break after all the walking we’ve done this week. Safe to say our feet appreciated it!

Next up: Tokyo! Tomorrow we jump on the train for a whole new kind of adventure bright lights, big city, and a heap more memories waiting to be made.
