Have you ever had a day that didn’t go as planned but still turned out to be ok? Our second day at the ski resort had all the elements of a snowy adventure: icy roads, a minor car accident, and a sledge session on a ski slope.

Here’s how we turned a frosty mishap into fun and some tips for staying safe on icy roads and making the most of unexpected moments during your travels.

We started our day slow and cozy, enjoying a lazy morning before having lunch. Snow tubing was on the agenda, but icy roads had a surprise in store for us. Just after exiting a roundabout, a car skidded and clipped our rear bumper. While our bumper cracked, we counted ourselves lucky his car suffered much worse damage after being rear-ended too. Despite the chaos, no one was hurt, and every car managed to drive away safely.

After sorting out insurance and gathering our nerves, we continued to the tubing spot, only to find it closed due to -7°C weather and high winds. Not ones to let the day go to waste, we grabbed our sledge board and made our way to the ski slope. What followed was good fun, racing down the slopes trying to avoid the chaos and listening to the screams echoing through the chilly air.

We returned home with rosy cheeks and stories to tell, calling insurance over a comforting homemade dinner. It wasn’t the day we planned, but it’s one we’ll remember.

Waking up in Klínovec was like stepping into a snow globe. As I mentioned yesterday, six inches of fresh snow had transformed the landscape into a magical winter wonderland. After breakfast, we decided to embrace the day and rent a sledge for some snowy fun.

Renting the sledge turned into a bit of an adventure. With no Czech skills on my part and minimal English on the shopkeeper’s, we relied on some enthusiastic hand signals to figure it out. Thankfully, we got there in the end, and soon we were ready to tackle the snowy hills with our new wooden sledge.

The runs leading to the main slopes were long, winding, and full of life, with others enjoying them just as much as we were. Georgia and I spent the morning zipping down the hills, the cold air in our faces and laughter echoing through the snow. Dotty, on the other hand, was content pottering about refusing glove and unsure about exploring the fluffy white wonderland.

By lunchtime, we were ready for a break. We headed to the ski lodge to warm up and refuel, enjoying the view of skiers gracefully weaving down the slopes. The atmosphere was perfect, but Dotty soon after lunch decided it was nap time. Ali took her back to the car while Georgia and I carried on sledging for a couple more hours.

The sledge itself brought back memories of a colleague back in the UK who had purchased one years ago (that looked like our rented one) but I don’t think he ever got to use it due to the lack of snow. Let me tell you these wooden sledges are amazing. Sledging was an absolute blast!

I don’t know what it is but there is something magical about racing down a hill with the wind in your face, surrounded by snow sat on a box. Don’t just take my word for it, watch the video and see for yourself how much fun we had! Sadly I never got on the slopes but maybe another time!

As the day came to an end, we reluctantly packed up at about 3:30 and headed back, still buzzing from the fun and feeling rosy-cheeked from all the fresh mountain air. With the snow piling up and the temperatures staying well below freezing, tomorrow promises more snowy adventures.

Perhaps we’ll find another hill to conquer or try something new whatever it is, Klínovec is sure to deliver, until tomorrow.

Leaving Prague was bittersweet, this city never fails to charm. Before we set off, we had one last adventure at Prague Castle. Navigating the roads there was an experience unsure whether it was our turn or the trams’, we managed to make it through with a bit of improvisation.

The castle itself? Simply stunning after looking around Ali and Georgia ventured up the bell tower of St. Vitus Cathedral, soaking in the views that I’m told were breathtaking views. Meanwhile, Dotty and I embraced a more grounded approach, enjoying a slice of cake and some coffee (juice for her, of course) in the courtyard café, marvelling at the grandeur around us.

Upon reflection it’s clear to say that Prague truly leaves you wanting more, with its cobblestone streets, majestic landmarks, and the bustling vibe of a city that feels alive in every corner. The weather was peculiar today, very hot as we drove away it was still hovering around 11 or 12 degrees, not the – we had been accustomed to over the last few weeks, it felt surprisingly warm for January. But what awaited us in Klínovec was a different world entirely.

We arrived around 4 PM to heavy rain and 7 degrees there was remnants of snow from previous weeks, now very slushy and wet. After unpacking, I took a quick trip across the border into Germany to pick up some dinner (the nearest supermarket). The drive through the hills was surreal, with thick fog clinging to the slopes, making the whole scene feel straight out of a movie I didn’t even see the border checkpoint (typically they are unmanned but not always)

Anyhow, by the time I returned and got the kids to bed, winter had fully reasserted itself. Glancing out the window, I saw two inches of fresh snow already blanketing the ground and I was glad I went shopping before putting kids to bed!. By the morning, that had doubled to five inches. Klínovec has no intention of letting the snow go away, with daytime temperatures predicted to linger at -5°C for the week ahead.

Tomorrow might just call for a classic winter adventure so I’ll be looking to rent a toboggan or sledge for some fun in the hills. Here’s to embracing the frosty charm of this beautiful region!

Exploring Prague

This morning, we hopped on the tram into the heart of Prague, ready to make the most of our last day in the city. The town was busier than we’d expected for the time of year, but the buzz of commuters and tourists only added to the city’s lively atmosphere.

We started our day wandering through the Old Town, surrounded by stunning, majestic buildings that seemed to require our attention at every turn beautiful colours and artworks seem to go on as far as you can see. Of course, we had to stop by the Astronomical Clock a true piece of history and craftsmanship, though I think the charm of the square itself might have been the real highlight (despite the Xmas markets being packed away!

From there, we decided to check out the Museum of Senses. The mirror maze, upside-down room, and wonky floor had us all laughing, and they were definitely the standout parts of the experience. That said, it was over quicker than we’d hoped, and the museum didn’t offer much beyond those highlights. Still, the we enjoyed it, and it was a nice way to break up the day.

After lunch, Georgia and I managed to squeeze in some more ice skating, which was a fantastic surprise. It’s such a fun way to spend time together, and I love seeing her confidence on the ice grow with every attempt. Meanwhile, Dotty wasn’t feeling 100%—a bit of Calpol and some downtime helped, but we kept things at a relaxed pace for the rest of the day.

We strolled through the town towards Charles Bridge, soaking up the atmosphere as we went. A nearby play area gave them a chance to burn off some energy while Dotty didn’t know if she should play or sulk.

On our way back, we stopped by the Christmas markets, which were in the process of packing up. It was bittersweet while it was a little sad to see the festive stalls being dismantled, we still managed to enjoy a final treat. Ali tried honey wine (safe to say it won’t be making her favourites list!), and we grabbed a chimney cake. While tasty, I still think it’s a bit overhyped, but the kids loved it, so that’s what matters.

Our day ended with a tram ride back home, reflecting on everything we’d seen and done. Sadly, the funicular up the hill was closed for repairs, and we didn’t get a chance to visit the observation tower for those sweeping views of the city. But that just gives us more reason to return.

Prague has been an absolute delight it is majestic, vibrant, and full of surprises. It’s firmly on our “would visit again” list, and with so much left to explore, we know another trip would be just as memorable. For now, though, we’re saying goodbye, already looking forward to another time… maybe.

Tomorrow we will stop by the castle on the way out before heading for the hills!

As we said goodbye to Brno and hit the road to Prague, we reflected on a day packed with discovery and fun. Brno had impressed us with its castles and Christmas lights, but it was our visit to the VIDA! Science Centre that wrapped it up.

We weren’t sure what to expect from VIDA!, but it turned out to be a perfect way to spend the afternoon. Dotty was completely absorbed by the water table, playing with lock gates playing with the flow of water. Given her condition hands-on activities bring out her best smile, and this one really delivered.

Georgia, always curious, spent her time exploring exhibits on renewable energy and how wind power works. Watching her excitement as she pieced together how these things connect to everyday life was a bit of a proud parent moment for us. Ali and I even got stuck into a few of the activities ourselves (Ali sillily went in to a spinning machine and had to leave, she nearly passed out from labyrinthitis) even so there’s something about playing with science that makes you forget you’re supposed to be the grown up.

VIDA! Seems to sneak in education without making it feel like a lecture. We left feeling like we’d all learned something new while having fun at the same time.

Onward to Prague

The drive to Prague wasn’t long, and as we arrived, the city greeted us with its lively energy and busy roads. We’re staying just outside the centre, so it’s a short tram ride into the heart of the action. The kids are already looking forward to exploring tomorrow Georgia is determined to see Prague Castle, while Dotty will just be excited on the tram ride itself (it’s the little things that make her day).

For now, though, we’re settling in and getting ready for another full day of adventures. Brno gave us plenty of memorable moments, and we’re excited to see what Prague has in store.

Just when you thought you had seen the last of the stories about Christmas you started reading this….

Our journey started by bidding farewell to Slovakia, as we crossed into the Czech Republic we greeted by a magical blanket of snow. It was late afternoon by the time we arrived, and navigating the icy, slippery roads proved to be a real challenge. With the snow covering road markings and tramlines, we drove carefully and slowly, eventually finding a safe spot to park.

Once settled, our accommodation turned out to be a delightful surprise. Spanning two spacious floors, it offered plenty of room for the whole family to unwind. The view from our windows, with the city sparkling under its snowy coat, was absolutely breathtaking, it is a beautiful city and this was a perfect preview of the adventures to come.

The next morning, we headed straight to the castle. Although the interiors were closed for the season, the grounds were open, allowing us to explore snowy walkways and soak in stunning views of the city below. It felt as though we had stepped into a winter fairytale.

From there, we ventured into Old Town, where cobbled streets and looked at historic buildings and streets. We strolled in and out of some local shops, eventually warming up with steaming cups of hot chocolate in hand. The charm of the town is undeniable, and every corner seemed to have stories of the past from nuclear bunkers to old castles.

Earlier in the day, Dotty had woken up feeling a bit under the weather. So we decided to retreat back to the comfort of our accommodation for her to take a nap, Georgia took the opportunity to indulge in a long soak in the hot tub bath her second one in as many days! Judging by her enthusiasm, we might just have a budding spa enthusiast in our midst.

Anyhow, as the sun dipped below the horizon, we experienced one of the trip’s highlights: the castle Christmas lights. For just €25, we purchased a family ticket.

The castle grounds were transformed into a sparkling sight with cannons, knights, horses and even a dragon. There were lights that danced across the ancient stone walls flickering along the pathways, and the snow’s reflective glow made it all the more magical. Trees shimmered with decorations, and every turn revealed something more captivating than the last.

Despite being under the weather, Dotty’s was excited as she explored the glowing displays. Georgia, ever the adventurer, enthusiastically pointed out every decoration she spotted. It was a heartwarming experience, and we left with smiles all around.

Tomorrow, we’re off to the science museum for a day of discovery and fun. It promises to be an exciting hands on adventure.

After the museum, we’re heading to Prague to explore its stunning architecture, historic streets, and winter charm.
