Welcome to our travel diary chronicling a spectacular seven-day journey through Tasmania, the heart of nature’s beauty and historical mystique. We embarked on a Tasmania Adventure Travel that promised to blend the thrill of exploration with the wonders of learning.

Our Tasmanian voyage commenced as we waved farewell to the bustling cityscape of Melbourne, descending into Hobart under the dramatic embrace of a rainy sky—an auspicious start for any adventure! With spirits undampened, we collected our hire car, our reliable companion for the journey ahead, and drove straight to our first major stop, the hauntingly beautiful Port Arthur Historic Site.

Port Arthur Historic Site: Port Arthur bewitched us with its stark beauty and echoes of a somber past. As we wandered among its ruins, the tales of convicts and colonials came alive, offering a profound insight into Australia’s colonial history. The juxtaposition of tragic history with stunning landscapes made this visit exceptionally poignant.

Eaglehawk Neck: En route back to Hobart, we paused at Eaglehawk Neck, where nature staged a breathtaking show. The vast ocean merging with the sky created a scene of such splendid beauty that it seemed almost otherworldly. This place offered a moment of peace and awe that lingered with us.

The Laundry Cafe, Battery Point: Revitalized by a scrumptious breakfast at The Laundry Cafe in quaint Battery Point, our adventure continued with renewed vigour. The cafe’s warm ambiance and delectable offerings were a perfect start to our day.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery: Our exploration deepened at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart, where a tapestry of local history and culture unfolded. The collections provided a deeper context to our Port Arthur visit, enriching our understanding of Tasmania’s heritage.

Kelveden Beach: Before heading to Bicheno, we stopped at the serene Kelveden Beach. Its expansive sands and crystal-clear waters offered a tranquil retreat from the hustle of travel, reminding us of the simple joys of seaside serenity on our Tasmania Adventure Travel.

Bicheno: Our Airbnb in Bicheno was a hillside haven with mesmerizing sea views, setting the stage for mornings greeted by the sun’s dance on the ocean waves. The highlight here was the enchanting penguin parade at dusk—an unforgettable spectacle of nature’s charm.

But the highlight of Bicheno was yet to come. As twilight deepened, we gathered to witness a natural spectacle – penguins! Watching them waddle ashore in their adorable, clumsy manner was an experience so magical it felt like a scene from a storybook.

Cradle Mountain we explored the surrounding paths, immersing ourselves in the pristine wilderness that makes this area so special. As we meandered around the mountain, we were delighted by a rare encounter with an echidna. This unique, spiny creature was leisurely navigating through the underbrush, its distinctive snout burrowed deep in search of ants. The sighting was a magical addition to our walk, offering us a glimpse into the diverse wildlife that inhabits Tasmania’s rugged landscapes. Witnessing an echidna in its natural habitat was not only a highlight of our day but also a poignant reminder of the natural beauty and ecological diversity that Cradle Mountain preserves not to mention the amazing photos you can take of the mountain.

East Coast Nature World: Just outside Bicheno, East Coast Nature World captivated us with its engaging and educational wildlife encounters. This was no ordinary zoo, but a place of interaction and learning, delighting both kids and adults alike.

Rosevears and Aspect Tamar Valley Resort: Continuing our journey, we stayed at a charming farmhouse B&B in Rosevears, enjoying the pastoral beauty and friendly local hospitality, epitomized by Milo, the joyful resident dog. A visit to the Aspect Tamar Valley Resort added a touch of Swiss charm, with its unique architecture and picturesque setting.

Richmond: Our adventure concluded with a visit to Richmond, a town that captures the essence of old England with its historic bridges and well-preserved buildings. It was a fitting end to our journey through Tasmania’s diverse landscapes and histories.

Our family trip to Melbourne began with an aura of excitement at Heathrow Airport, which felt like a bustling gateway to adventures unknown. Melbourne, known for its harmonious blend of the historical and the contemporary, promised a unique exploration into a city where culture pulsates through every street. This journey wasn’t just a holiday; it was an adventure of discovery for our little family, including our youngest, Georgia, who at just 6 months old, was about to embark on her first grand adventure.

Travel Experience: The journey commenced in luxury aboard an Etihad Airways A380, an experience that felt like stepping into the future of air travel. The spaciousness and comfort provided the perfect start, with Georgia comfortably nestled in her bassinet. Upon landing, Melbourne greeted us with its dynamic charisma, instantly enveloping us in its vibrant culture and lively spirit.

Today felt like the quiet inhale before the next big chapter. After more than a month of mountains, glow worms, alpine lakes, forests, geysers, beaches, and every weather pattern known to humanity, we finally wrapped up our New Zealand adventure and boarded the early flight out of Auckland.

The girls were buzzing from the moment we stepped onto the plane. Dotty thought the seat-back screens were the greatest thing since finding a new stick on a walk. Georgia settled in like a seasoned traveller, headphones on, like a tiny queen on tour.

The flight itself was smooth… the kind where everyone just sinks into movies, snacks, and the rhythm of the engines. Before long, New Zealand faded below the clouds and Australia began to rise ahead of us.

We grabbed our hire car then we hit the Great Ocean Road.

What a way to arrive.

After picking up the wagon, we pushed straight out towards the coast and got smacked in the face with one of the most dramatic landscapes you’ll ever see. Giant cliffs. Rough surf. Sky doing a full watercolour painting across the horizon.

First stop was Cumberland River, where you can feel the whole coastline breathing around you. The air has that salty weight that sits on your skin and makes you feel both tiny and alive at the same time.

Then the big one.

The Twelve Apostles at sunset.

Standing there with Ali carrying Dotty on her back, Georgia marching ahead with her boots on, and the wind rolling over the cliffs… it honestly felt unreal. Like stepping straight into the front cover of a travel magazine and realising you’re the main characters.

The sea was hammering the stacks, the sky was glowing gold and purple, and the whole place had that energy that makes you forget the world exists outside the moment.

Tomorrow we push further along the Golden Coast Road, exploring more of this ridiculous landscape before heading into Melbourne proper.

New Zealand gave us adventure. Australia looks like it’s ready to give us fire.

We carried on along the Great Ocean Road, and the coastline just kept throwing out bigger and better scenery. Our first stop was London Arch, this huge slab of rock sitting offshore like it’s barely holding itself together. The waves crashed underneath it, carving away at the layers, and the colour of the water made it even more dramatic.

A bit further along we reached the Grotto. From above it looks like a cave, an arch and a pool all mashed together. When you stand in the right spot you get a perfect frame of the ocean through the opening. It felt like one of those places you accidentally discover, even though it’s been there forever.

We kept following the coastal path, checking out the cliffs and rock stacks around Razorback. The shapes in the stone are unreal close up, like someone sliced the cliffs with a giant breadknife. The girls loved spotting patterns in the rock while the ocean hammered the cliffs below us.

Just inland we ended up at this little dairy and agricultural museum that looked tiny from the outside but opened up into room after room of old machinery. Massive engines, dairy gear, vintage tools, signs and farming history stacked everywhere. Georgia wanted to pull every lever. Dotty called every engine a tractor. Ali probably wished the gift shop sold earplugs.

Then we headed back toward the water and walked out to Port Fairy lighthouse, standing bright white and red against the black volcanic rock. The wind nearly took us into the sea but the views were worth every gust. Dotty got another ride on my back, as always, and Ali grabbed the perfect lighthouse photo with the girls.

To finish the day we found a monster metal slide built straight into a sandy hill. Georgia launched herself down it like she’d trained for this moment. Dotty sized it up, took a breath, and committed. Her scream of joy echoed the whole way down. Sand absolutely everywhere… worth it.

We spent the rest of the day driving toward Adelaide, the car full of crumbs, boots full of sand and the kids buzzing about “the cave window,” the lighthouse and of course the mega slide.

Another day where nature went full show-off mode and we matched it beat for beat. Wow.

We kicked off the morning with a stop at one of the most brilliantly named places we’ve ever seen: Stick-Tomato Cave. It sits quietly in the bushland near Mount Gambier, tucked inside the volcanic region that runs across the SA–Victoria border. And no, before you ask, there are zero actual tomatoes involved.

The name comes from early settler slang. The shrubs around the sinkhole drop small reddish berry-like pods that were nicknamed “stick tomatoes”. The cave inherited the name, and it stuck. Classic Australia. Strange plant, odd nickname, volcanic hole in the ground. Perfect road-trip mix.

The cave itself is a collapsed lava tube, fenced for safety but easy to get down into. Jagged rock edges, deep shadows and pockets of greenery clinging to the walls… i immediately labelled it everything from a dragon nest to a secret base. With the drop disappearing into darkness, I could totally picture both.

After stretching our legs we jumped back in the car and continued the long push through rural SA. The landscape shifted constantly – thick bush turning to open farmland, then pockets of tiny towns, then long empty stretches of highway where you could drive for ages without passing another car.

By afternoon we reached Adelaide, our next base for a couple of weeks. After the big mileage, the bags exploding in the back, the snack wrappers somehow multiplying on their own, rolling into the city felt like hitting a proper pause button.

We woke up to another bright Adelaide morning and decided it was time for the girls to meet some proper Aussie locals… the furry, the fluffy, the grumpy and the downright adorable. So we headed up into the Adelaide Hills to a wildlife park perched on the mountainside, where the air feels cooler, the gum trees stretch forever, and every rustle makes you wonder if a kangaroo is about to hop out and say g’day.

The first local to greet us didn’t hop out… he wandered over like he owned the joint. This kangaroo strolled right up to Dennis and stuck his nose in the camera like a seasoned influencer. Georgia was in hysterics. Dotty wasn’t sure whether to giggle or hide behind Dad, but the roo seemed more interested in posing than causing trouble. Absolute legend of a marsupial.

A little further down the track we spotted a whole crew of youngsters gangly ducklings wobbling around with their parents shepherding them like a football team that’s lost formation. They were busy pecking the ground, arguing, wandering off and then sprinting back together. It was chaos, but adorable chaos, the kind that makes the girls forget they’re tired and just watch in total wonder.

And then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The koalas.

If kangaroos are the larrikins of the Aussie bush, koalas are the sleepy old uncles who wake up only to eat and then immediately go back to bed. The one we met had clearly just clocked on for the “chew gum leaves” shift. He sat on his branch, munching slowly, eyeing us with that classic koala expression that says, “Mate, I’ll move when I’m good and ready.”

We got close enough for a gentle pat. Georgia looked like she’d just met a celebrity. Dotty watched from a safe distance, giving the koala a look that clearly meant “you stay on your tree, I’ll stay over here.”

The whole place felt peaceful and authentic. No big crowds, no rushing, no noise except birds calling overhead and the soft crackle of eucalyptus leaves under your feet. Just a proper Aussie wildlife moment, the kind you can’t manufacture and can’t forget.

By the time we walked back to the car, we were all smiling, and i had about 200 new photos of kangaroos’ noses.

After a busy run of exploring, we decided the girls needed a pure fun day. No caves. No cliffs. No long drives. Just playtime. So we kicked things off at one of Adelaide’s big soft play centres and it turned out to be one of their favourite days so far.

Georgia spent half the time dressed as a masked superhero, flying through tunnels and racing toy cars like she owned the place. Dotty threw herself down the slides into the ball pit with that full-body excitement only a five year old can generate.

After refuelling, we headed north of Adelaide and found ourselves on the peninsula at St Kilda Beach, one of the calmest stretches of coast we have ever seen. Endless white sand, warm wind and a jetty that feels like it reaches all the way to the horizon. The beach was almost completely empty which made it perfect for the kids to run wild.

Ali wrote “Australia 2025” in giant letters across the sand, arms in the air like the star of her own travel film. It felt like one of those small but powerful family moments. The kind that sticks with you.

A simple day. Soft play. Sunshine. Space to breathe. And a beach that made us stop and appreciate exactly where we are.

Our day in the centre of Adelaide turned into one of those unexpectedly brilliant travel days where nothing goes to plan, the weather sulks, and yet somehow the kids, the coffee and the Christmas decorations save the whole thing.

It was Black Friday, and everyone kept warning us:

“The city will be packed, the traffic will be chaos, good luck today.”

Honestly?

It wasn’t that bad at all.

Traffic was fine, the crowds were busy but calm, and the whole place had that humming pre-Christmas energy without the meltdown.

The rain didn’t let up all day, but it kind of made the whole thing feel even more festive.

We wandered through Rundle Mall, found the giant Christmas sleigh and trees, grabbed a family photo and got completely soaked but didn’t care. Georgia spotted a Lego flower stall and nearly exploded with excitement, pointing at everything like she’d discovered hidden treasure.

The Central Market was warm, colourful and packed with fresh local food. We strolled around, admired the fruit stands, the bakeries and the cheese counters. It felt like a proper heart-of-the-city place, full of locals grabbing ingredients and families getting out of the rain.

Outside, Adelaide’s jacaranda trees were glowing purple through the drizzle.

We wrapped up the day with a coffee and hot chocolate because that’s how parents survive travel.

Wet. Busy. Christmassy. Easy. A proper good Adelaide city day out!

After a morning of city rain and Christmas chaos, we swapped pavements for paradise and headed down to Port Willunga on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The beach feels like someone mashed together Cornwall, Portugal and a bit of movie magic.

The water turquoise.

The sand soft.

The cliffs carved out like ancient cathedrals.

Georgia and Dotty running up and down the shoreline, chasing waves and exploring the old ship-cutter caves carved into the golden rock. Those cliffs look like something straight out of an adventure film, and Ali treated them exactly like that secret rooms, pirate hideouts, treasure chambers… we had imagination on overdrive.

Down on the waterline, the famous Port Willunga jetty ruins stand like skeletons rising out of the sea. They’re iconic for a reason moody on stormy days, unreal under blue skies, and perfect for photos while the kids leap around them.

We walked the bay, let the wind blast the cobwebs out, and loved how quiet it felt even though it’s one of Adelaide’s most photographed beaches. Just a couple of families, sunshine, and endless room for the girls to run.

Simple day.
